CITY RATES.
TOTAL TO DATE. A BTJSY DAY. The city rate office was kept very busy yesterday attending to the people who came in to pay their accounts by March 31<st, and so avoid the risk of being sued for the rates left unpaid after that date. Mr J G. MaodonaM, the city rate collector, had made special arrangements for handling the rvuih of business, and no undue delay occurred at. any .stage of the day's work. Alter the office closed, Mr Macdonald and his staff were kept hard at work until late in the evening checking and totalling the returns. The sum of £'22,379 3s 5d was taken yesterday, which, with the amount of rates already paid, made the total received to date £194,114. The amount still outstanding totals £19,450, and according to Uhe decision arrived at by tile City Council summonses will bo issued for the recovery of this amount from the ratepayers affected. The fact that over £90,000 has come in during the present month; when a measure of pressure has been applied, shows that ratepayers could pay earlier if they desired. It is antiei[Kited that tiho mails will bring a further amount, and, of course, these who posted their dues on or before to-day will escape prosecution.
