Sir Alfred Bird, MP. for "Wolverhampton West, who was knocked down and killed by a motor-car at Hyde Park Corner, London, early in February, was an enthusiastic anayltical chemist, and it is said that he invented "Bird's Custard Powder" for his own amusement. In his younger days an all-round athlete and one of the pioneers of cycling, Sir Alfred ascribed his vigorous health to this exercise. At 70 lie did a 100 miles cycle run in a day. Even at 70 years of age it was his practice, weather permitting, to set apart one day a week for a run.
