EAST COAST RAILWAY.
PBOGSESS OF ESKDAIiE SECTION. It is anticipated thnt within the nexb few weeks good progress will bo rondo in the plate-laying of the first section of the East Coast railway from Napici' to Eskdale. On Wednesday the Kawatiri left Newcastle for Napier, via Auckland, with 15.000 sleepers. Of these 15.000 sleepers, 9000 are for the Eskdale section of the East Coast railway, and the remaining 6000 for the new line from Waikokopu to Wairoa._ The distance of the line from Napier to Eskdale will be Hi miles, and these 8000 sleepers will enable about 3'- miles of the plate-laying to be carried out. It is anticipated that before these have been used up the remainder of the consignment necessary to enable the plate-laying to be completed to Eskdale will have reached Napier. The rails and fastenings for the whole of the section are already on hand.
The necessary buildings for the railway are well in hand at Eskdale, and already two cottages have been completed, whilst another one ia under way.
