NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.
Now Borough Overseer. The appointment of Mr J. Wilson as Borough Overseer (vice Mr Ryan resigned) has been confirmed. Mr Wilron is an old resident of New Brighton, and prior to his present appointment wa9 leading hand on the Council's outside staff. Mr J. Bellamy takes over the position rendered .vacant by the promotion of Mr Wilson. Prior to his' departure on the occasion of his leaving t.he Council employ Air Ryan was presented by the members of the Council ith a wallet, a cheque from the Borough, and a gift for Mrs I-iyan. Ocean Motor-Boat Ea'ces. Weather and sea permitting, a Motor Poat Race will be held this afternoon 'rom Sumner jetty to New Brighton Pier, starting at 3.30 o'clock. As a number of the larger launches will be taking part, the event should prove interesting During the Easter holidays a number of the local launches will visit Akaroa, Port Levy, Tjyttelton, and other places' of interest. Aquatic Carnival. The Surf Club are holding an Aquatic Carnival and Surprise Packet distribution on Saturday next in aid of the Building Extension Fund. • There will be all manner of side shows, and other rorms of entertainment promised for old and young. Inter-Borough Contests. The first of the seiics of Inter-Boi-ough Competitions New Brighton v. Sumner talces place this afternoon and will consist of cricket and Surf Club events. On Monday evening next a billiards and snooker tournament will be held. In connexion with I he sports programme, the local Senior Cadets have accepted a challenge from the Sumner Cadets to a football match to be played at New Brighton and a rifle match to be fired at the Redcliffs range

Spe:i«il music was given by the choir at each of the rcrr.'ices. In the evening the duet "0 Lovely Peace' was sung by Mrs P. Burrows and Bliss Olive Curtis, whilst Afrs Marks gave "Consider the Lillies." Mr Gc-orge Simcock and Miss Spratt officiated at the organ. The Young Men's Bible Class under the leadership of Mr R. Rowan, has recently made considerable progress. With a view to creating greater interest, a voung people's service, preceded by a song service at G. 15 is to bo held tomorrow evening, when addresses will bo given bv the Rev. W. "VVaker and the Rev. C.' H. Olds. School Committee. The School Committee met on Thursday evening. Present: Mr F. Ward (chairman), Mesdames G. Gordon, \Y. Bellamv, Rev. W. Walker, and Messrs E. H. "Gott, J. Buxton, find the f<cretary, Mr H. A. Gl< n >s<>n. ihe headmaster reported that the number on the rolls was: Main School 621, South Brighton .34. North Brighton 108. The Education Bonrd wrote stating till at there was little chance of obtaining a special grant at the present time for the proposed addition to the Slain School. Very strong cnminont was marie nn the Board forwarding the names of only two candidates to fill two vacancies on the etalT. and requesting the committee '.o make a selection. The secretary was instructed to write to the Board urging it to recognise South. Brighton School as a, side school. Cricket. The local Wednesday Half-holiday Cricket Club played n match against the Veterans Club oil the Now Brighton pitch on Wednesday. The visiters scored 107, and New Brighton 65 for five wickets 'Fisher 21, Bisman 10). The match will be concluded on the 14th inst. Beach Improvement. The construction of the stone wall on the eea. front nirth of the pier was completed yesterday, and the general opinion is that it is a very fine structure, and a great improvement on the pal in a: fence which it replaces. The foundation stone and tablet, for which spnoe 'has been provided, will he placed in position shortly with due ceremony.
Band Social. The Now Brighton Municipal Bnnd held a, social and dnn?e in the Pier Hall on Wednesday evening, which was a. success in every way. Tho music was supplied by -tin orchestra- from the band, under Conductor J. Nuttall.' Mr H. Bailey supplied the extras. The prizewinners in <i-ic card match were Mrs Pa-yno and Mr A. Cockle.
