2000-YEAR-OLD WINE.
Wine said to be 2000 years old was shown and described at a lecture given by Dr. W. L. Sambon in connexion with the Cookery and Food Exhibition at the Royal Horticultural Hall, London, recently. The wine has long passed from its liquid state and is now Bolid. It was discovered some time ago in a cellar at Bosco Reale, near Pompeii, and it is the property of Dr. Sambon, who keeps it in cotton wool. "All the moisture it in has evaporated," said Dr. Sambonj "but it retains its old pungency and goodness. You can break a bit off with your fingers, put it in alcohol, and you have a perfect wine; but even the aroma of the solid wine itself is very nice. I should sav its nearest modern approach is good burgundy. This is the Lad of -wine about which Horace used to write in his poems. Dr. Sambon also described some cooking implements which are as old as the wine. They include a mould in the shape of a partridge., a wine strainer, and a pastry cutter with a beautifully made spiked wheel, lins last, with a little oil and persuasion, could easily bo used by a modern housewife.
