In Darwin the union secretary is the Lord Mayor, and the men who pay the rates have no say in the spending of them, Grass gro.vs in the streets, 7ft. high in places; but that dees not mat* ter to tne Lord Mayor and aldermen, who pay no taxes, because the ratepayer is conscripted and compelled to cut the grass, not only on his own land, but also on the street. The Council gives "preference to unionists," but the only unionists they employ are those who are "financial" in the Lord Tvlavor's union, and the rates are kept high to make sure pf plenty of jobs for unionists, notwithstanding the fact that land can be purchased to-day # at a third of the price ruling 10 years ugo. The Ratepayers' D.efence League, however, hope to aIU-r things at the next election —they got within 12 votes of doing e<? last time.
