A special passenger train vill leave Christchurch at 9.20 a.m., returning from Greney's road at 5.20 p.m.
Tho weather conditions were perfect for the opening day of the A\eliinu:ton Meeting. With a north-easterly breeze that rapi ilv dried tho cour.se the going was somewhat dead at the commencement, but imoroved towards the end of tho day. The attendance for an offday was quite up to tho average. After his victory in the St. Leger, Kick Off was decorated with the red riaand by Mi is Harccurt, the daughter of the president of the Vi o'lington Club. The starting of Mr C. O'Connor was of 'his usual high standard, and as nearly perfection as possible. The somewhat large falling off on the totalisator may be in sotae measure accounted for by the very small pools on the St. Le?er and Challenge Stakes. The winners of the handicaps were hnrd to find, only one favourite scoring throughout the afternoon. There we re. no unpleasant incidents right throughout tlhe racing. Grim Joke brought a reputation tor speed from the South, on tho strength of which he was made a good favourite for tho opening event. He was in a good position three furlongs from li&ine, just behind the leaders, but he failed to quite see tho distance and his effort was disappointing. Erie, the winner, is a three-year-old filly by Nas- ' sau from Mountain Dream. She shot out at the half-distance and won very comfortably. Coalition looked a long way from being ready for racing, and ran accordingly. Alteration went down very well, but seemed unable to go tho pace in the early stages, but was running on at the finish. Tho St. Leger was reduced to a trio, Cleasant-a being overshadowed by he:' opponents Kick Off and Pluto. Kick Off went down full of fire in his preliminary. but Pluto, who had the rervices of A. Oliver, was not so impressive. Cleasanta. made the pace, and tried to ' slip her opponents down tlhe back. Kick Off, *who has now won four times in four starts, won very comfortably at the finish. He was turned out in great order, and was a credit to his trainer, \V. J. Donovan. Pluto had to be ridden right out to narrowly beat Cleasanta, "febe solid pvico set. by tho latter in the early etages quite settling the chestnut's chance of success. Fifteen fair two-year-olds went to the post for the Plunket Nursery, of whom Moorland, Rapine, Mountain Lion, and Lucius looked the pick, llapine, t/he winner, is a business-like-looking bay gelding by Martian from. Pinetn, so a brother to Penitent and a of Epitaph. He came out of the ruck and won like a good one. Gold Light, the second favourite, was somewhat unlucky, for after starting from the inside she lost her position, had to come through her field, and could not quite get to the winner. Lucius is a big black colt by Lueullus from March, and likely to be heard of later on. Songbird and Sunny Corner were withdrawn from the Thompson Handicap, and nothing looked better than Anomaly, Insurrection, and Radiant Light. The winner turned up in the useful Printempe, by Autumnus from Rene. He was always well placed behind the leaderß, and came away in the straight, but had to be kept going to win. Considering his excellent record of late 4 —five places in his last six Btarts —the dividend returned was a good one- Silver Peak, as usual, was slow to begin, but put in great work in tho straight, and finished very fast. Gasbag ran a very solid race, and should stwp a lot better next timo out. Anomaly, who was a good favourite, had every chance, but petered out at the end of seven furlongs, and Tres- ( pass was noticed to bo going well at tho finish, after being: well back in the early stages; Mustard Pot had to come outside his field, which left him without a finishing run, and he was at the tail end of the field at the winning post. Radiant Light lost her place four furlongs from home, and was not afterwards prominent. The Challenge Stakes was reduced to three, only Rational throwing down tho gage to the Southern champion. Gleaming, who was ridden by R. Hatch. Rational looked well, and has furnished since his visit to Christchurch last Nov amber, but he had no chance with Gloaming- The latter was never off the hit, and was never headed. Ares is a -useful two-year-old gelding by Martian from Paphia, and is very well. The conditions governing the Silverstream Handicap announced originally that the apprentices would not be allowed to use either whips or spurs, but on the application of sotno of the owners, that condition was withdrawn for this meeting, but in future in all apprentices' races at Trentham the riders will not be allowed whips or ' spurs. Petunia, the cast-off of the Gloaming stable, made no race of the Silverstream Handicap, although his - apprentice rider, taking no chances; kept hia mount going right to the end. Lord Desmond made the best showing of the remainder, for after being well back last in the .early stages, he was not more than .four lengths from tho winner at the finish. Nothing went down better in the preliminary for the Railway Handicap than Songbird and Sunny Corner, while Grotesque looked as if a race would benefit him. Three eons of Absurd were left to fill tho places. Mireusonta, who is a four-year-old gelding from Rosie Desmond, had the measure of Still Sea at tho half-distance. He. like Still Sea, has been promoted but lately from the hack class, but had no difficulty in defeating tfeis fair field of sprinters. Siill Sea had the rails the whole way. and had every chance to score. Bon Spec, as usual, faded out over-.the last hundred yards, while Sunny Corner was disappointed when trying for a run on the in the straight, and she should win shortly. Surveyor was prominent m the centre of the course n hundred yards from the post, but did not go on with it. Songbird was not well placed in the early stages, but was close up nt. the finish.
After six there were eighteen left to go to the post for the linahori Handicap. Red Hind won in a convincing fashion, though she had a smooth passage ail the way. Merry Day, who i 3 a filly by Merry Moment from Labour Day, shot out of the ruck at the distance and was galloping over everything at the finish. Merry Day has now been placed I . u "®[ last four starts. Danger Zone, by Martian from Crimson Kose. was easily the hest-looking horse in the held, and although the weight told on ium in the run home, he will bo heard or in much better company when seasoned. Xandbird, the three-year-old brother to Chimera, showed speed, but failed to stay. ' Th© New Zealand horseman Stan. Kcid rode Oopina, winner of the -Narong Hurdles, at the V.A.T.C. Meetliofu at on Saturday, March Ibth. He was also on Falstof, who nmshea second to Irish Rufns in the
Gordon Steeplechase. Irish Rufus was bred bv Mr G. 51. Currie at the Koatanui Stud, being by King Kufus— Moira-Machree.
Biplane's brother, Winged Victory, won the Kalamunda Handicap at Perth last Saturday, but as he was getting 2st from the second horse, the performance was nothing to brag about. Winged Victory showed no form when trained by J. Holt, and Mr N. Falkiner sold him at 110 guineas.
The death took place at-Baumber House, Horncastle, Lincolnshire, early m .February, of W. E. Elsey who at one. time was one of the lead l n 3 *J ae r of racehorses in England. In 1900 Els . headed the list of trainers in regard to the number of races won, with a total of 124 In the following year torses trained by him won 110 races. Owing to local associations, Elsey particularly liked to win races at Lincoln, and iiia first important success was gained there when Ella Tweed won the Brocklesby Stakes in 1894. There is little doubt the best horse he ever trained was Lord Edward 11., a horso by Enthusiast— Noble Duchess, who won four out ot eight races as a two-year-old, lneiutl-, ing the valuable National Breeders Produce Stakes at Sandown Park. Contemporary with Lord Edward 11. "as Deuce of a Daisy, a very speedy ally, and winner of many races. A remarkable mare trained by Elsey was Xenie, who was put into training after having five foals, and was winning races at 14 years of age. The Baumbef establishment was a noted nursery tor joekeys, r.ianv clever apprentices developing their skill there, the most notable being E. Wheat-lev. The deceased gave up training some years before the war, and was succeeded by his son, C. i. Elsey, who had been his right-hand man. C. Elsey now trains at Avr. W. "E. Elsev's eldest son is tho Bishop of Calgoorlie. Our correspondent telegraphs:—The Dunedin Jockey Club has received its permit for the race meeting to be held on April 22nd for the benefit of returned soldiers. Tho programme provides for a hurdle, a maiden plate, the Lady .Tellicoe Handicap, two hack races, a six-furlong event to be known as the Alexandra Handicap, the Diggers' Steeplechase (to he run over the schooling jump, not including the sod wall or the water jump), and a welter. Tho stakes are good enough to provide some consolation to owners who mies winning at tho Easter Meetings. WELLINGTON R.C.'S AUTUMN MEETING. ' (SPICIAI. TO "TTTK WELLINGTON", March 30. The Wellington Racing Club'e Autumn Meeting was commenced in beautiful weather. "There waa a fair attendance, and tho track was in good order after the recent heavy rain. The Thompson Handicap tell to an outsider in Printemps, who came at the end and won fairly decisively from Silver Peak. Gloaming, as expected, won the ■Challenge Stakes in a canter, and Kick Off defeated two opponents in the St. Leger in a manner that stamps him as a very fine stayer. The totaliaator handled £39,110 10s, aa against £56,923 on tho first day last year, a decrease of £17,812 10s. Results: FIRST HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 350 80T8; IJm —6 Erie 9 9 L. G.
