The sudden death is announced at Shanghai of Mr Peter Marshall, manager in Shanghai of the Eastern Extension, Australasian, and China Telegraph Company. Deceased, who was well known in Nelson, was o3 years of age, having been born at Brunnerton, . New Zealand, on July Bth, 1869. He had for many years been a valued servant of the Eastern Extension ConiI pi'-ny, and had held appointments at most of their more important stations, including the Cocos Islands, Perth (Australia), Saigon, Labuan, ana chow. Of a quiet and retiring disposition, says an Eastern exchange, Mr I Marshall never figured prominently in ! public affairs, but he was a man who tv as widely appreciated for "■his many sterling qualities of character, and for much unostentatious work of a very helpful nature. He was keenly interested in sport, golf, tennis, racing and billiards claiming his special interest. A farmer stated at the Magistrate's Court in Auckland that his income for several months past from a sixty-acre farm had been £4 a month. With this he had to support four people.
