The Hon. E. P. Lee will leave Christchurch for Oarnaru by the second express to-day.

The Hon. W. Noswoi-thy, Minister of Agriculture, is spending a day or two in C'hristchurch on Departmental business.

The Rev. Dr. Erwin, of Knox Churoh, became ill on Saturday, and was oper. ated on for appendicitis at "The Limes'' on Monday. He is now progressing satisfactorily.

An interesting visitor to New Zealand is Mr G. H. Silverwood, headmaster of Gray's College, Essex, England, and formerly of Trinity College, Dublin, and London University. Mr bilverwooM, who is accompanied by Mrs Silverwood, is at present on a world's tour, and intends visiting all the British overseas possessions before returning to England.

The Waimairi County Council, at its annual: meeting yesterday unanimously appointed Mr W. J. Walter its chairman for the ensuing year. The retiring chairman, Mr W. P. Spencer, was congratulated on the manner in whioh he had conducted the Council's business during his term of office, and it was decided to place on record the Council's appreciation of the good work he had done. The North Canterbury Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, at its meeting yesterday, welcomed back its treasurer, Mr" W. Bailey, of Sumner, who recently underwent a serious operation for Ma eyesight. Mr W. A. Banks, the chairman, expressed pleasure that Mr Bailey was considerably improved in health and in eyesight, and said he would undoubtedly be spared to do much further valuable work for the executive. Mr Bailey briefly returned thanks.

Mr James Findlay, New Zealand representative of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, is shortly returning to England: Mr Findlay came out to take charge of the head office of the company just before the outbreak of hostilities. During the war he occupied the position of chabrman of the, New Zealand Overseas Shipowners' Committee, and for bis services in this position received the 0.8. E. It is un J derstood that Mr E. V. Bevan, assistant manager of the company, will succeed Mr Findlay, and that Mr Guy Turner, of Xevin and Co., will be the new assistant manager.
