UNEMPLOYMENT.
POSITION AT GBETMOTJTH. (SPECIAL TO "THB PRKSS.") GREYMOUTH, May 25. There rare more unemployed about Greymouth to-day than there have been for several years past. The membership of the Greymouth Waterside Workers' Union is now 240, and new recruits are coming forward every day. "During the last week," said the seoretary of the Union, "eighteen men made application for work. There was, however, no work offering, while the majority had no money to join the Union. Two were assisted by me, but after working several shifts they drew their money from the shipping company and vanißned. Three boats are working in port, and 70 would be rather an over-estimate of the num. ber of wharf labourers who worked today. This Is due to the export of timber, which is the mainstay of the po{t, falling off. Little inward cargo is being handled.
