The annua] meeting of members of the Canterbury Jockey Club will be held at 4- p.m. to-day. Acceptances for the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Winter 3ieeting close today. The death occurred at Lyall Bay, Wellington, on Monday of Mrs Reed, widow of the late George Reed, father of the well-known riders, Ashley, Roy, and Con Reed.
At a meeting of the committee of the Ashburton Trotting Club the question of" starting by yards or seconds was togain freely discussed, and it was decided to adhere to the .yards system. Arrangements .were made for a special horse train for the forthcoming .Meeting. The New Zealand-bred Forward Lady (Advance—Oka), who was sold some time back to go to Sydney, won the hurdle race at the May Tattersall's Meeting at Randwick. She started favourite, ami won comfortably, carrying lOst. 3!b.
At Pori.rua J. H. Prosser has the jumpers Chummy and Conquest doing strong work,'and the pair are to make their first appearance this season at the Otaki Meeting. Courtfield and Stream of Gold, from the same stable, are also under orders for Otaki.
- During the running of the Juvenile Handicap at Adelaide on May 14th the veteran 'Melbourne horseman, R. Lewis, rider of Gnat, collided with a post at the starting barrier, and broke one of his toes. He rode a vigorous finish, however, and won'by a short nflsk, but on returning to the' birdcage he could dismount,"and had to be lifted out or the saddle and on to the scales.
. The Rover, -winner of the last Australian Cup, is evidently intended for the jumping game, as he has .been nominated for the Grand National Steeplechase and the Hurdle Race at the V.R.C. Meeting, to be heldd in July. - New Zealand was well represented at the finish of the Brush Steeplechase at Epsom on May 14th (says the Melbourne "Leader"). Riding School has been "expected" for some time. He was got by imported Riding Master (by Melton from a relative to Grafton) from the New Zealand-bred mare Girton, by Eton (a son of Carbine's sister). Insn Rufus, who dead-heated with Riding School, was got in New Zealand by Kmg Rufus (grandson of Melton) from Moira ma Chree, by Cyrenian from Cuirasette, the granddam of Koatanui, a good Queensland performer of some few seasons back. . The third dam of Cuirasette was imported Mermaid, the dam of Lurline, Waterwitch, Lb Loup, Naiad, Malice, and granddam of Darebin. King Rufus, at the foot of his dam, Arrowroot, was imported from England to New South Wales by Mr William Brown. To Wallace Arrowroot produced the good horse' Loch Amos, and the following season.she bred ArroWform, by Multiform. Irish Rufus;looks worthy of his blue blood, and before the winter is over will probably figure at something considerably shorter in. price in stronger company than he met in this race. . F Wootton had a P r ° fit , ab te £"£ noon at Manchester on March 28th He won three Hurdle races, his mounts being Just for Luck, and Square Meal, each trained by Coultwiite. Wootton's only other mount was Chin Chin, who was second in tne Lancashire {steeplechase. * Captain C. Bennet, who finished the Liverpool Grand National on Turkey Buzzard after threfe falls must be made of tough material. About a tortnight later, at Plumpton, he had to be removed to the station on a stretcher consequent on an injury to his ankle through his mount, colliding with a post, but a couple of days after that be won the Lancashire Steeplechase, ot. £1750, three" miles and a half, on Black Lamb.
