The newly-built State prison of IlhA slight curve in the skylight, designed by a professor of astronomy at the University of Chicago, gives every one of the 248 cells that do not get sunlight direct, 90 minutes of sunlight on every bright day. Every cell has an individual wast bowl, with hot and cold water. In the centre of the prison i 3 n tower, from which the guards-can see the movements of all the prisoners. The prison is surrounded with a circular concrete wall, 33ift high, and at night the outside or the prison is lighted with brilliant electric lights.
