HOCKEY.

SATURDAY'S GAMES. The second round of the Hockey Associations' competitions was played on Saturday l last. Tie conditions were perfect, and two of the senior matches were well worth watching. The contest between Addington and Christchurch was very even, but the standard of hockey was very poor. SELWYN 3 v. CRANFORD 1. The match between CTanford and Selwyn was played et Lancaster Park, when a very interesting game was. witnessed. Selwyn had a slight margin, due mostly to the superior knowledge of their forwards in circle work. Orenfoxd opened tne attack, and for a epell had the game confined to Selwyn) territory. The tatter's half lino, however, put in some strenuous work, and eventually set their forwards going, and the Oranford backs were hard pressed, Soper doing some fine defensive work. Selwyn persisted, and a fine piece of combined play between Woodfield and H. Bell enabled the letter to send in a shot which went into the net off Templeton'e pads. Even play followed until shortly before half time, when H. Bell transferred to Richmond, who scored from a difficult angle, making the score Selwyn 2, Oranford 0. On resuming Selwyn again instituted a vigorous attack, but Soper and Mander put up a solid defence, and play was shifted to the Selwyn) circle, where RObb was forced to concede ai corner, which was fruitless. Selwyn again attacked, but a breach by the forwards gave Cranford a free hit, and danger was averted! for the time being. Cranford now assumed tho aggressive once more, and from a scramble in the Selwyn circle Smell found the net and registered Cranford's solidtary l goal. Cranford made desperate efforts to notch a second goal, but the Selwyn half line and backs were very safe, and the whistle blew with the score Selwyn 2, Cranford 1. Mr H. Throp was referee. Y.M.C.A. (1) v. SYDENHAM (1). Sydenham opened the attack, their shooting enabling Y.M.C.A. to clear. Sydenham came back, and Warburton missed an easy! shot. Y.M.C.A. then took a turn, Holland making a fine run, but Berry stopped him and set the •Sydenham forwards going. They l pressed Y.M.C.A.'s goal, but a eeriea of corners gave them no moje advantage, and halftime sounded with no score. Y.M.C.A, took the offensive on resuming, and kept Sydenham defending, several shots going close, and Snooks bringing off some fine Baves. At last Y.M.C.A. made a passing rush, which ended in Holland scoring. Sydenham then took up tho attack, and Cummings equalised. Up and down play followed, both sides trying to score, and herd hitting kept the i game open till time sounded, with the score Sydenham 1, Y.M.C.A. 1. Mr C. Bellamy was referee. ADDINGTON (2) v. CHRISTCHURCH (1). Addington were again one short when they l met Christchurch at Hagley Park. Neither side claimed much advantage in the opening) stages, and Christchurch then went down the field, Beaton sending in a shot which glanced off Luxton's stick and over the bar". Beaton had to go off, his knee, which troubled him last year, giving out. Christchurch kept up l th» attack, and Williamson opened their score. Addington livened up and kept Christchurch defending, but poor shooting nullified their chances, and play went back to midfield, where it remained till half-time sounded, with the score Christchurch 1, Addington 0. Addington took the initiative from the bully, and succeeded in reaching the circle, where a breach gave them a chance, which enabled Biz to make the score one all. Both sides were now endeavouring to obtain the winning goal, but play remained in the centre until a forward rush by Addington enabled Rix to score again. Christchurch . made strenuous efforts to score, but Addington kept them out till time was called, with the score Addington 2, Christchurch 1. Mr E. Ballinger was referee. JUNIOR GRADE. Selwyn 10 (Hulston 6, TJnwin 2, Shepherd, and Squires) defeated Y.M.C.A. 5 (Robinson 3, Turner and Armitage). Referee, Mt T. Le Motte. Technical A 2 (Steere 2) drew with Sydenham 2 (Fragnell and French). Referee, Mr C. Bishop. Cranford 4 (Hocking, Kiddy, Attyeo, end Barker) defeated Technical B 2 (Stewart and Calvert). Referee, Mr M. Bugg.
