F. P Fendall, vicar of St. John's. Rangiora, who is leaving Rangiora to take over the Glenmark parish, preached his farewell sermon last night, when the church was crowded. In saying good-bye to his congregation Mr Fendall said he had been for 29 years minister to the parish, and he was leaving with many pleasant memories of times spent amongst the people. SHEFFIELD. Notwithstanding the inclement weather, there was a very good attendance at the annual social and prizegiving in connexion with the Doyleston Sunday school. An excellent musical programme was given, comprising recitations'by Bobby Lochhead, W. and P. Quartermaine, Donald Robb, and by parties of girls and boys, songs by the girls and by Misses Dalley, Annie Brizzle and E. Reese, and Mr R. Barnett, a cornet solo by Mr H. Austin, and various other items by the children, who performed very creditably. The Rev. W. Laycock, who presided, gave a short address, referring especially to the work of the teachers. Prizes were distributed, every child in the 'school receiving something. Supper was served by the ladies. The anniversary service was conducted by the Rev. A, C. Lawry. DTJNSANDEL. ' Mr F. Lill presided over the annual meeting of residents held for the purpose of electing a Committee of Management for the hall and library for the ensuing year. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £ls 10s.Id on the year's working. The report stated that a lighting plant had been installed, and that a series of social evenings held during last winter had ,been very successful. It was decided to hold similar socials during this winter. It was reported that the number of subscribers to the library had doubled. Officers were elecEfed as follows: Chairman, Mr F. At a well-attended meeting of the committee of the Southbridge Football Club held on Thursday night, Mr S. Woods presented a statement of ac-, : counts in connexion with the recent benefit concert given by the Christ- , church Commercial Travellers' Concert Party. The net proceeds were £37.Appreciative reference were made to the work of Mr Woods as organiser, and to the services of the concert party and those who provided cars to motor them out. In recognition of his generosity in presenting a handsome banner to the club, Mr A. B. McEvedy was elected a life-member. Messrs Bern, McEvedy, and R. Howatson were appointed selectors of the junior team. A very successful and enjoyable harvest social was held in the Southbridge Methodist Church last Tuesday, at which there was a large attendance. Musical and other items were given by Mrs Perkin, Misses R. and D: Ramsey, and Grace Tong, and Messrs L. Eade, H. Austin, and Duthie. The chairman, Rev. W. Laycock, welcomed three new families to .the district. The ladies served supper, for which they were thanked. At the Southbridge Court, on Friday, judgment was given for plaintiff by default in M. S. Roi v. C. Neilson, claim £3 17s 6d. A. judgment summons case, Pegley v. Everest, was adjourned for hearing at Leeston, on April 28th. Messrs R. B. B. Willis and W. Scott, J.P.'s, were on the bench. Th children of the Omihi School kept Anzac in memory on Friday afternoon, each girl laying a sprig of "rosemary for remembrance," and each boy a spray of "laurel for victory" on the Soldiers' Monument. Thereafter they recited in unison the Australian pledge, and saluted the flag. Mr Doak, chairman, counselled the boys and girls, as the future citizens of New Zealand, to live clean lives, practising justice and mercy. The Rev. Mr Bailey spoke of James Chalmers, who gave his life for New Guinea, and of other self-sacri-ficing men, and he asked 1 the children, in a moment's silent prayer, to thank God for those brave soldiers who died for this fair country. The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close an impressive little ceremony. HINDS. There was a satisfactory attendance at the annual meeting of parishioners of Hinds parish, in the hall, on Friday evening. The vicar, Rev. J. F Feron, presided. The vicar's report stated that the attendance at all centres except two had been good. Ihe vestry had worked harmoniously with him, and had contributed greatly to the success of the parish. He was deeply indebted to the- organists who had helped greatly with the services The year had seen the district raised to a parish, and a positive pipe organ had been placed in the church. The churchwardens' report showed that the year closed with a credit balance of £d bs Bd. The total receipts had been £o7J 3s. 6d. Mr J. Scales was appointed vicar's churchwarden, Mr John Cook people's churchwarden, secretary, and treasurer. The following vestry was elected: Messrs J. M.Hampton v.. W. Cottam, R, R. Williams T Mulligan, C. Jaine, C. Beckley, G. Burch, H. McCleary, S. Weeks, and l>. 31. Noble. ASHBTJBTON. It is understood that the Ashburton Hospital Board has purchased the Malvern Home, as a maternity hospital.
