_— —4 Tile War Office will shortly make an interim payment of £IOO,OOO on account of Australia's share in the Army Canteen profits, Pierre Loti, the famous French writer, appeals to Great Britain not to assist in exterminating the Tuflcs, who are a loyal and brave race, by supplying money and munitions to the Greeks. The War Office Cinematograph Committee has earned a further £18,719 by the hiring and selling of national war films on behalf of war charities. This gives the Australian Government a further £6OOO, and New Zealand £ISOO for war charities, making the Australian total £II,OOO and the New Zealand £6500, compared with Canada's £13,500, South Africa's £6OOO, and India's £SOOO. sho committee has distributed a total of- £77,500. Tho Justice Department, nt Chicago has ordered a sweeping search for W. D. Haywood, leader of the Industrial Workers of the World, who failed to return to tho Federal prison to complete hiß sentence of twenty, years' imprisonment when the Supreme Court rejected his appeal. The Justice Department is informed that Haywood has arrived at Riga, in Russia, having left the United States while on bail for 15)000 dollars. Haywood was convicted of violating the Espionage Act. In connexion with the schemo for welcoming overseas visitors, the meetin" at Australia House, London, appointed a committee to draft proposals. The meeting was held at the suggestion of Lo.d Novar, formerly GovernorGeneral of Australia, to consider the formation of an unofficial organisation 'for.the purpose of welcoming prominent overseas visitors and affording them means of studying home institutions-at first hnnd. and of meeting British people interested in the Dominions' wel-' fare.
