At the Cheltenham (South Australia) races recently, tho riders engaged in a cross-country event sent a deputation to the stewards with tho request that the brush steeplechase, in which there wcro 24 starters, should be Tun in rlivj- . sions, because the jockeys considered , that it would be unsafe to start so - r&anv. Tho stewards declined to accede to the request, and the jockeys, after consultation, decided to insist that the ' starters should not exceed 20.
