WAR MEMORIALS.

SOUTH SPRINGSTON HALL OPENED. The Springston South Soldiers' Memorial Hall was opened yesterday, afternoon, in the presence of a very large gathering of residents and visitors. Mr T. Quaylej chairman of the committee, I presided. < •Mr R. A. Chaffey, who performed the opening ceremony, congratulated the people of the district on putting up such a fine hall to the memory or those who had fought for their country, and .urged that they should see to it that any returned maimed soldier or any in ill-health should want for nothing. Major Macartney (Tai Tapu), Rev. H. Ryan (Springston), Messrs J. Cunningham (chairman Ellesmere County Council), A. T. Thompson (chairman Springs County Council), F. Rowell (Brooksjde), and R; Patterson (Lakeside) also delivered addressies. <' Mr Harold Hoskin, on behalf of the returned soldiers, thanked the residents for erecting such a fine hall to ' the memory of those who -had fallen ''as well as to those who had returned. Cheers were given for the builder, MrT. Greaves, and the chairman, after which afterripon. tea was dispensed and items were given by Misses L. ( Chamberlain, C. Ryan, L. Bartram, A.. ' The unveiling of the Soldiers' Memorial for the Prebbleton district. took place yesterday afternoon 'before a large •ancV representative gathering. -The. pro- ' ceedihgs'xvera opened the National Anthem, after which the Rev. A. L. Canter dedicated the memorial to the glory of God and in memory of the fallen! _

The unveiling 1 .ceremony was performed by Mrs Eaglesome, pxro. of whose | sons were numbered among-the fallen. The local Brass Band -then played*] the: "Dead March in Saul," and the ' proceedings terminated, with the Benediction and the soundiijg of "The Last Post" by Bandmaster S. Gooke. ' . j The- memorial takes the form of a gre" granite column surmounted by an urn, resting on" a base of sandstone and concrete, andj situated in front of the Public Hall, Prebbleton. The column is divided into four panels, the front one containing ihe names of the fallen, . and, on the other three are recorded the names of those men of the district who answered the call to arms. The memorial is a very handsome pjece of work, and was designed and executed by Mr Silvester. The names of those fallen recorded on the memorial are :r-P; Clive.R. Eaglesome M. Eaglesome, M. Gallagher, L.' Gabbatis, D. A. McGill, A. Stevenson, N. Scarlett. F. P. Smith, G.' W. Thompson, Hj R. White.; " Many floral 'tributes were deposited, at *the foot of the column.
