FIRES.
The rear portion of a four-roomed house at 120 Nursery road, *Linwood, was iataaged by five early yesterday morning; but the atrival of the Chrii,tchurclll Brigade saved the building, which was owned and occupied by Mr Patrick J» Pop 9» The house was insured for £2OO with the State office, and the contents were insured for £2OO with the New Zealand Insurance Company. .

Heard) and hid jvife andT son, who lived on the premises, had a narrow having to jump from the Upstairs windows; The firer men had trying experiences, and several were overc.oftie by the smoke. Halteiistein'b buildings also buffered considerable'damage, principally bjf water. The fire is believed to have been caused by a candle, which had been left in ihe bathroom.
