DOMINION BENEFIT FUND. SAWMILL AND TIMBER WOBKEBS. The proposed sick benefit fund for sawmill and timber workers throughout the Dominion has progressed a step further towards realisation. The Sawmill Owners' Federation and the Timber Workers' Federation, having agreed that the time has arrived when the workers in the industry throughout the dominion should bo covered by a sick fund, a joint sub-com-mittee of the" two organisations was set up last February to draft a scheme. It consisted of Messrs D. Valder, Hamilton, and W. J. Butler, Hokitika, representing the Sawmill Owners' -federation, and of Messrs F. Turley, Westi„«ri „,,j Hiram Hunter. Chwstchurch, representing the Timber Workers Federation. The main features of the scheme were decided upon at a noting of the sub-eommittee, held in February, and the details were referred to Mr Stanley Milroy, of the Kauri Timber .Company, Auckland, to. work out. Mr Milroy has completed this copies of the detailed scheme, have been received by both federations, and will be submitted shortly to meetings of the two organisations for confirmation arid adoption or otherwise. ' The main provisions of- the _ scheme are that there "shall he a Dominion Sick Fund, covering all the employees in the industry, the benefits to apply not only to sickness but also to special accident cases and accidents occurring outside the*hours that employees are covered oy the Workers' Compensation for Accidents Act; the fund is to -be controlled bv an executive located at-Wel-lington, "consisting of an equal number of representatives of each organisation; the workers are to contribute 6d per week and the employers 9d per week in respect of each employee; and that the benefits shall be: £2 10s per week for the first three months:.and £l.los for the second.three.months. The scheme, if adopted, will, be,' it is understood, the first of its kind applying to workers in an industry throughout the Dominion; the miners' benefit fund, though a Dominion one, is on 'different lines, a portion of the royalties received by the State being paid into it. .
