MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

'■-.- CHRISTCHURCH. Dr.iThacker was unable to attend the meeting 'called by him for the Beckenham School last night, but an informal meeting was held, and a vote of thanks and confidence in him as Mayor was passed." At ithe Somerfield School last evening, Cr. ;F. R. Cooke,-the Rev, J. K. Archer,': and Mr C. Renn addressed a moderate', attendance of electors. A few questions were answered. Mr Beanland Bpoke in the Rugby etreet ! Schoolroom last evening. The chair was occupied by Mr H. Holland, and there were about sixty electors present, j Mr Beanland had a good recepj tion. In answer to a~question ; he said he was in'favour of the municipal elections being held triennially, and he favoured the same provision for absences voters as obtained in the Parliardentary elections. A vote of thanks and confidence was- proposed by Mr A. D. Hassall, and was carried unanimously. . Mr T. H. Harker, the Port Christchurch League's candidate to represent the districts of New Brighton, Sumner, Woolston, Lyttelton, Akaroa, Mt. Herbert, and Wairewa, spoke in the New Brighton Pier Hall last night. There was a good attendance, over which Mr J. H. Kibblewhite (Mayor) presided. After stressing the advantages of the schemes of Mr Cyrus Williams and Mr Samuel Jickcl for opening the Estuary for shipping, Mr Harker explained that there was sufficient surplus revenue in the Harbour Board to pay interest on a large loan or to enable the Board to spend £20,000 to £40,000 per annum in opening up the place for coastal shipping. Mr Harker estimated that on 750,000 tons of coal and timber alonp a saving of about £50,000 per annum' would be effected by landing the goods at Heathcote instead of Lyttelton. The candidate stated that if elected, h* would leave no stone unturned to make the members of the Board study the question . fearlessly. He . dwelt ; at length, on. the advantages of an Estuary harbour,.and said with its advent fresh commercial life would be given to Christchurch, which would become known, not as the "town behind the smoky tunnel," but as a great manufacturing centre. At the close of his I address Mr Harker received a voteof l thanks and confidence, .the motion pledging those present- to secure his return.'

HOSPITAL AND.HAEBOITB.BOARDS The only nominee for the combined districts o'f New Brighton, Sumner, Woolston, and Lyttelton on the Hospital Board was Mr Duncan Mcßae, of Woolston, and he was ejected. Mr S. K. Sleigh, the sitting member, was yesterday elected unopposed as the representative of payers of harbour' dues on the Lyttelton Harbour Board. IN OTHER PLACES.
