Mr F. H. Bakewell has been appointed to fill the vacancy on tho Senate of University of Now Zealand. The Ihinedin Photographic Society has" received advice that Lord Jellicoe has consented to become its patron. Mr L. A. Huttorl, chief clerk in the Alliance Assurance Company's I>unedin office for tho past ten years, has been promoted to the Wellington office. Mr J. Sead-Cowing left for Wellington by the AVahine last night, to attend the annual meeting of controlling officers of tho Council of the Fife Underwriters' Association of New Zealand. At tho "Waimakariri Harbour Board meeting yestecday, congratulations were extended to Mr F. B. Lane, on his being elected unopposed as Mayor of Bangiora. The resignation of Mr R. D. Adams as borough electricnl engineer, was accepted at last night's meeting of .the Riccarton Borough Council, he having accepted a. similar position with an adjoining borough council. Mr Reginald Sargeant was appointed as his successor.
At the annual meeting of householders at Sumner, on Monday, opportunity was taken to present' Mr D. Lumsden t who is retiring from School Committee work, after 25 years' service, with a gold watch and chain, and gold-mounted fountain pen. Mr G. A: Alexander made the presentation, and Mr J. McCombs, M.P., paid a tribute to Mr Lumsden's services. "At the Returned Soldiers' Club last evening, tho president, on behalf of the members and the executive, presented Mr V. M. Edgar, retiring treasurer, with a cheque for £25, a gold albert, and a case of pipes. In making tho presentation, the president referred to the faithful services rendered by the recipient to the Association, and said that during Mr Edgar's period of office more than £2OO had been saved to the Association by his judicious management.
Next month' Rev. Fathers .Aubrey, and Gilbert, accompanied by Dean Regnault and Dean Holly, leave for 'Deiffert, Luxembourg, to attend the general Chapter of the Marist Order, which is to be held in August. They •will represent the New Zealand province. The Chapter is held every seven years. Father Aubrey was for a number of years parish yricst at Greymouth, and Father Gilbert, who is a native of the West Coast, is Rector of St. Patrick's College, Wellington. Mr Charles Francis, proprietor of one of the largest printing business in New York, who is on a'world's tour, ia at present in Dunedin. His next move is planned to take him.to Christchurch, .then GreymoutE, after which he proposes to spend a week in Wellington, and* a week in Auckland, leaving the last-mentioned port about the end of May, and proceeding to Australia. Mr Francis came to Dunedin from Hobart in 1864, and started the "Otago Punch" two years later, afterwards leaving for New York, where he is now known as flie of American, printers."
At lost night' b meeting of the Christchurch Drainage Board a letter was read from Mr Edwin Cuthbert, resigning his position as engineer, secretary, and treasurer. He felt he was still in a position to. render some service to the Board in connexion with the exten<sion scheme about to be undertaken, for his doctor assured him of a com* pleto recovery from, his present state of health, and he would-be clad if he were appointed the Board's consulting engineer. On the motion of Mr Holland, the Board decided to place on record its high appreciation of- the valuable services rendered by Mr Cuthbert for many years as engineer, secretary, and treasurer, and to express its regret that owing to failing health Mr Cuthbert was compelled to tender his resignation, which the Board accented with regret, and granted Mr Cuthbert three months' leave of absence on full pay. '-' : Mr Charles James Henderson,- superintendent of the Bank'of Australasia" throughout the Commonwealth of- Australia and the Dominion of New; Zealand, completed 60 years of service in the bank on the Oth.inst., he having joined the Ballarat branch of the bank on April Ibth, 1871. On arrival at the,, bank at "Melbourne on the morning of Monday, 11th inst. A Mr Henderson received an ovation from the staff, who heartily cheered him and offered their congratulations. On Tuesday afternoon, to mark the occasion, the staff presented Mr Henderson with an illuminated address, congratulating him on his jubilee, and assuring him of their continued loyalty and regard for himself arid the-bank. The address was accompanied by handsome presents from the staff to both Mr and Mrs Henderson. Mr H. J. Ralph, Melbourne manager, made the presentation in the boardroom of the bank on behalf of the Australian and New Zealand staffs. Mr Walter Hill, chairman of the Christchurch Drainage Board, is about to leave on a holiday trip to England, was farewelled at the meeting of the Board last night, members expressing to Mr Hill their appreciation of his excellence- as a chairman, and their wish that he would have an enjoyable and beneficial tour. Mr Hill said he rejoiced in believing that he possessed the confidence of the Board. He hoped* while at Home to see what he could do in the matter .of the | Board's finances. The. new scheme was | now complete, and it only required the voters' authority to enable the money, to be raised, and the work proceeded with. ! There might be a-difficulty in raising the £750,000 loan in New Zealand, and I he intended to see what he could do lin London. He did not favour the adoption of the Auckland lead of issuing debentures at a discount. In view of the present difficulties, the Board would have to consider how little of the new scheme they should carry out for the next year or two, until things eased down to normal. Mr H. J. Otley was appointed acting-chairman during Mr Hill's' absence.
