CHARITY ORGANISATION.
STUDY CAROLE FORMED.. .
On Monday evening at a meeting of students of the W.E.A., it was decided ; to form a study circle, under the direction of Professor Condliffe, to study as a practical' eoonomio and social problem the organisation of charity in Christchurch. A list of the different bodies and organisations dispensing charitable and benevolent aid has been compiled, and each member of the class has been allotted one, in respect of which he is to obtain information. The proposal was enthusiastically taken up, and it was decided, to meet fortnightly. Ths method to_ bo adopted by tlho members of the circle is as follows: First, obtain complete list of agencies. Define scope of, both as regards charity and area. From such agencies obtain balance-sheete, statistics, etc., over a series of yearo, and also a statement of aims and methods. The statistics, etc., must be combined and analysed. An estimate must also be made of pensions, etc., reoeived from the general Government* also of friendly societies' benefits.
The headings under which information is to be obtained are us set out below:—
1. Number of charitable agencies, classification and extent of their operations. ' The total cost of charity in Christchurch, and sources of revenue. • • 2. How far these agenciesTneet tan demand, Is there any overlapping? Estimate of extent of poverty in Chris cohurch.
3. How many individuals nro relieved? Extent of. relief in individual casas. Hereditary cases. Investigations of causes of poverty. , il A J e ™ e .problems getting worse or better f Estimate of efficacy of charitable agencies.
