OVERLAND FROM PICTON.
SUGGESTED ONE-DAY SERVICE.
(SPECIAI. TO ''THE PRESS.") WELLINGTON, April 19.
' A proposal that the Railway Department should be asked to run a fast passenger train between Picton and Wharenui three days' a week, in order to make possible, a one-day overland connexion, between Picton. and Christchurch,, "was placed before the Central Progress League to-night by Mr WiU Lawson, organiser for the Marlborough Progress League. ■■_■ Mr Lawson said that if a train left Picton after the arrival'of the ferry steamer from Wellington, it could reach Wharenui at about 10 a.m. Motor-cars could then take the passengers to Kaikoura in time for lunch, and on_ to Parnassus in time to catch the afternoon train to Christchurch, .arriving : there about 8 p.m.' He suggested that the service should be tried in the spring, when the tourist traffic wouldmake it profitable. The distance to be covered bv motor-car would be about ninety miles. . ' The League adopted a resolution supporting the proposal, and '.agreed ( to make representations on the point ,to the General Manager of Railways.
