HOW SEALAftR WAS SAVED.
WILD FIGHT WITH STORM.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) ' SYDNEY, April 12. The fetor? of. tho savin? o£ the coastal steamer Seala-rk during the past "week is ft thrilling one. Tho Sealark, loaded with produce, left Devonpoit for Sydney on Sunday with just enough coo.l to eee the voyage out. &Ik> met a. wild north-east stonn, and when she was oil Kiama, abQut 80. miles eooith ot Sydney, on Wednesday night, the coal was almost exhausted. At five o'clock on Thursday morning the captain called all hands on deck and set them to work chopping up tho deck cargo of timber for firewood. They worked at this all Thursday—but it was no tiro. The timber was soaked by th» blinding rnm and the seas which constantly broko over the little vessel, and the engine fires gradually died out. The stoamer began to drift rapidly southwards, in the grip of 1 stonn, and distress rockets were sent up. About this time tho steering gear earned away. Tho rockets brought tho passenger coastal steamer Merimbula, . about 11.3& p.m. on Thursday. The two ships talked with signal lamps, and tho Scalark aaked to bo towed into Jcrvis Bay. The sea. vras too wild to permit the launching of a boat, • eo tho Merimbula was nfancouvred round till a. heaving lino was got aboard tiho Scalark. A wire hawser was gent' aboard, but no sooner did the tow start than the hawser carted. Tho whole manoeuvre was repeated and another line got aboard the Sealark. Again the hawser parted. Hie storm increased in fury, both ships' were being 1 lashed by a terrific sea and gale; and "both were getting- dangerously near the coast. It was now 3 a'.m. on Friday. • The Merimbula's deck cargo of ■benzine had broken loose and endangered the whole ship. , ' The Merimbula then .went into Jorvio Bay, reported the plight of the Senlark—which rev suited in the destroyer Tattoo being rushod away from. Sydney—got another hawser and went back to tha Sealark. The Merimbula. got back to the Sealaik in. Jhe afternoonshe was now perilously near the rocks —and after a long hard fight got a hawser aboard and fast. The Sealark was then towed into Jet-vis Bay, eoon after dark. A few hours later the destroyer arrived off the Bay and began to search for the Sealark. Eventually the lighthouse signalled that tho Sealiwk was safe, and 'tho destroyer went back to Sydney. Tibe' little cargo steamer was only saved by indomitable pluck and British seamanship.
