One of the greatest of the many problems which make the life of the snip's purser as unhappy as that of a policeman is the question of how to keep the Eassengers from getting unutterably ored. The younger ones manage for themselves, but most ocean travellers consider themselves too old for casual love-making. Up to now the risk of fire has made the companies very chary of introducing the cinematograph on ship-, "board, but the increasing use of slowburninc film minimises this, and on board the American liner Martha Washington—a former Austrian ship—quite a large number of films are exhibited on every voyage between New York and South America. The wall of one of Ler deck-houses has been whiten! for a screen, and it must be admitted that on a warm tropical evening a discreetly darkened deck with deck chairs makes an ideal picture palace.
