A CRISIS AND A CONTRAST. PEACE IN THE UNITED STATES, Unemployed in Great Britain on March Stoth last numbered 1,375,400. lliots at Islington with 23 iniured, seizure of 33 houses at Cambcrwell, Mr Clynes howled down —these episodes preceded, the great coal strike with ita ruination of pits, violence in Scotland ; smashing of machinery and hints ot revolution.
The liquor party prophesied that prohibition woula bring labour unrest and red revolution on the TJ.o.A. The population of tho U.S.A. is more than twice that of Great' Britain, and industrial .reconstruction means correspondingly larger numbers affected, and'hundreds of thousands ore out of employment. But, i according to ; "The American Issue" of February 6th last, "not one instance of disturbance by the unemployed in the United States is recorded."-. The secret is revealed by the "Iron Age," a sternly practical' business paper, which, in its -issue of February 3rd last says :—"Jn the toungstown district ( the personal deposits of every man, woman and child approximate £l3O, exceeding so far as known, similar figures from any other community of equal size in the country. Prohibition has been responsble to a large extent* for the change in the habits anjJ spending propensities of the average steel worker. And the ' 'Age'' goes on to. say these savings "will help tide -tbein over unemployment, . ... . .. „ , . ~Workers.iniGreat Britain b?vej?ee^ anu arei spending well over, £l,ooo,Uw per day on drink. , Here are 1 some typical examples of savings under prohibition. The figures are. official, and show the increases in Savang Bank deposits in 192 p. as compared with 1910.
