COACH FOE SOUTHLAND. At a meetiiyj of the Southland Rugby Union, held at Invercargill on Thursday night,* the question of appointing a professional coach for Southland was again considered, when it waa unanimously decided that E. E. Booth be appointed to the position, at & salary of £6 per week. Booth was at one time a prominent three-quarterback and full-bade in the Kaikorai First Grade team, and ■ was a member of. the celebrated All Blade team which toured Great Britain and Ireland. He subsequently played for some years for a Sydney Club;

INTER-'VAESITY RUGBY. The annual contest between the New Zetland, University and .the Sydney University was revived last season jrith such successful results that the New Zealand University Rugby Football Council is desirous of oonr tinuing the competition which, it is held, is beneficial to Rugby in New Zealand, and, to. a more marked extent, in New* South Wales. The University Council has decided to a send a representative team to Sydney this season, and the Hew Zealand Rugby Union .!»»» granted the necessary permission. A series of test matches will be played against the Sydney. University team, and arrangements are being made for additional matches against the Duntioon RJ&.C. team, the Great Public Schools combined team,' and, if time allows, the Sydney Metropolitan team. The New Zealand team will to selected-from the four University Colleges, and; the Council is of opinion that it is absolutely essential that the members of the team should play in at least one game_ before leaving New Zealand. The Council has, therefore, asked,' the Wellington Union to arrange a fixture between a Wellington representative team and the New Zealand University, to be played at the Athletic Park. The Wellington Union has agreed, and the match will be 'played on Wednesday, May 18th, the day prior to the '.Varsity team's departure for-Sydney. In view of the fact that University football in the Dominion iB of a good standard, a keen contest should result. In a letter- to "the Rug-By Union, the secretary of the University Council states: — "In arranging this tour the greatest'difficulty which, confronted my Council ■ was the financial one. Last year we were fortunate in getting fine weather for all the gomes, and succeeded in netting £37 J. In' view of the fact that we wish the intercolonial contest to be continuous in the future, we deemed it inadvisable and unbusinesslike to use up. all our finances, in one i year, _ and, therefore, we placed £2OO on fixed deposit till 1922, when we will have to finanoe the tour of, the Sydney University team through New Zealand. This leaves us with a balance of £177 to carry on this year's tour. Our, estimated expenseb are about £530, part of which will be defrayed ,by the different University Colleges. All revenue gained from the matches in Sydney goes to the Sydney University, who, in return, billet our team. My Council would Therefore be grateful to your Union if, in the event of your making 1 the fixture, you supplement our funds by grant-. in# us th® gate. Given/ a good day for the game -such a grant, should materially lessen the amount which each member of the team will have to pay towards his travelling expenses." After consideration of the matter, the Management Committee of tee Wellington.Rugby Union decided to grant the University Rugby Council a ehare of the gate similar to that received by the New Zealand ■ Union on the occasion of big; matches.. 1 a

The Management Committee of New Zaaknd Rugby Union .<n its annual report reference to the completion of arrangements with the South African, Rugby Board for a visit from the ''Springboks," who are due to leave Cape Town on May ISth, and after playing several matches in Sydney should reach New Zealand «t the-beginning of July. A programme of 15 matches has been agreed to, and the. manager of the ( visitors has been given discretionary power I to agt4x> to two further' matches, which the oominittea has asked for, so that the tour I may be as complete as possible. The esact itinerary of the tour las not yet been drawn up, being contingent upon the sailing dates of the intercolonial, steamers and the return steamer to South Africa. A proviaioiml itinerary has, however, been prepared and will be placed before delegates for discussion at the preliminary meeting which precedes the annual meeting. The committee ifls no doubt that no (jfioKt.will be spared to make the tour of the visitors a memorable one, especially after the splendid way in which the New Zealand Military Service fp-vm of 1919 Was treated during its tour of Soutih Africa. ■ • , Prefliminary negotiations have been entered into with the French Rugby Union with a view to a visit from its representatives in 1922, the'tour to include matches in ?<ew South Wales, as well as in I. ew Zealand. The •delegates' authority is . required to complete, tho negotiations, which m&y necessivate a variation of the usual financial arrangement entered into in such matters. The English Rugby Union is also willing to consider a visit to the Dominion during 1922. In accordance with tfaa agreement entered into, the New Squth Wales Rugby Umon is due to send a representative side I °. Zealand this season, toft- in view of tho viaftfef the South Africans to both countries the committee has asked u» Soufth W'alea Union to suspend «ny action until delegates have had an- opportunity u> «ipiess theirviews. It is .pleasing to note a rewai of interest in Rugby in New South Walee the officials- of that State sparing no time and effort towards making a t*cov~ ery. Apart from their own fixtures, they have the Sooth Aftioan visrt ahead (matches )wjng down for both the outward and homeward journeys), whU® sides from tiie New Zeaind TTnivcraty and the Maoris are also due to cross tbe lonian.
