COUNTY COUNCILS.
v f ASHLEY. ' Tlie Ashley County Council met on Thursday last. Present—Crs. Hugh tensor (chairman), Barwell, Bonnett, Dawson, Miller, O'Halloran, .and Philpott. Support was accented the Progress League's firm stand against the discontinuance of the permanent work at the Harper diversion.
Discussing work on Dobson's road, it was recognised that the need was almost wholly due to neglected scours by storm-water, ahd i.t wa« considered very necessary .to ae*ic landowners to let their men, when. passixvg through, attended to bad places, where an hour's wgrk -wotdd prevent an increase of scour, with corresponding expense of repair. It was decided to ask the landowners along tho main portion of tho road to help tho Council in this way. Messrs H. Blunden and Davison Bros, wrote aoking tho Council to give attention to their loads. Cr3. Barwell, Bennett, and Miller were appointed' a committee to investigate, with power to expend up to" stated sums.
Four tenders were opened for Grey Bridge, dicking, and that <>f Messrs Feather Bros, was accepted at £B4 16s, tho next tender, by Messrs Davison Bros., being £35. From the foreman's report of work done at the Burnt Creek bridge, it appeared advisable to consider "the bridge unsafe for traction engines, and a notice was ordered to be put up 'to' that effect at the l»idge. . Mrs Davis w as.» granted the lease of Deserve A, on certain conditions. An examination was made of the topdressing of tar ott the Mnkerikeri bridge, and it was decided to treat the Okuku bridge, and others when ready, in. the eamo way, With regard to the Mnkerikeri bridge it was decided, .in order to: save the planking in tho most effectual way, to coat it with it. few inches of tarred macadam, and the clerk was instructed to report on material as soon as possible. The clerk waa also instructed to report on tho cost of erecting a small bridge, in lieu of pipes, on the Mount Or«y road, ard leading' storm Water thereto after closing a ford across the road. The committee, r»s above appointed, would also examine th* epot. Cr. O'Halloran reported that some widening of the eastern approach cutting, at the Ashley Gorge bridge, would be undertaken at once. • . Thd matter of voting a. sum. to the chairman in lieu of travelling expenses wa* brought up, but action wa» deferred, until the annual meeting. , An application to cat willows for firewood, from the Ashley river embankment was refused. •
