Leahy, for lOOgns; a good investment, seeing that Speciality's two recent wiDs at Randwiek carried £4844 in prize-money. Prince Carl, the Carl Rosa gelding, • who had not won a race in the interval since lie brought off his surprise victory at ; Elleralie last November in tho decision of tho Hobson Handicap, won the Franklin Cup on Saturday last, the •distance of which extended to a mile and a quarter. The race at Pukekoho "had to 1)9 run on a heavy course (writes "Phaeton" in the "New Zealand Herald"), and with rain in evidence, Prince Carl proved himself' an accomplished mudlarker. i MAXAWATU T.C.'S ANNUAL MEETING. - : (special to "the press.") Owing to tho unoveu. state of the track, a largo number of horses failed to himdle the going, and three accidoiits happened during the day. Moon Drift was backed down to afinost even money in tho Trial, Handicap, and, beginning smartly, won, by n. .hundred yards from Special Traoey, who was driven by J. Bryee, junr.,. and -finished"'a similar distance in fro mi of Azslzioh. The winner made tho pace so solid that beforo half the ' journey had been covered tho majority of the wore in trouble, and hopelessly out of the race. May Dorh and Pillage made the 'best show of tho unplaced division, but there was little , merit in their efforts. ' The scratching of Moondriit, Palm Rose, War Lord, Eligwood, and Rio Grande in the Stewards' Handicap left a email field of five. Sidelight, the favourite, showed no pace and was well beaten info third place. Brandon j ied throughout, and owed Jus win to the j fact that l:e mado no . anistake-s. Huiua- j riki had tiic race won three times, .but was j • not driven -v/ith good judgment, princess i Bruce did not leave correctly, and Rosir.a j Elect performed indifferently. . ■Simple Peter was backed down to a short'| price in /the Linton handicap, with solid j support flor Mat Patch. [ In the nudd.e stages she made up a lot of ; pound, and tvro inrlongs from home -was third, but the effort proved too great, and • she retired beaten. The winner, "William the First, was m a generous , mood, and assisted ' rac ?> ™>n all out. by , a neck. ■William tho I'irst is a sis-voar-old griding and owned and trained by A. E. Adams, of Hawera, who tvon tho mile saddle race at the recent Hawcra Meeting. Warlock finished very fast, and defeated Waiteranui for second money by- a narrow margin, the next to finish being Ben Lomond and Onvx, come distance behind the placed horses. The Bsth and Bushchild were beaten at the end of ten furlongs. N.elson Derbv held & good position with lour furlongs to" go, but failed to etay- on. Day Drift fell after going 4 hundred yards, and his driver, E. J. Munro, bruised his shoulder and received a severe - shaking.Special Tracey, who finished second to Moondrift in the Trial Handicap, e&siiy ac- j eounteS for seventeen others in the North ] Island Ladies' Bracelet, and paid a useful dividend. Azelzion benefited by tho race he had earlier in the "day, and made a good | showing, but had no chance with the winner; Humariki, from 103 yds behind, paced a 1 nfucji better race than in the- Stewards' Handicap, and finished third. James Conway was backed by his connexions, but. failed to strike his gait at the start. Once he got. going' he snowed sufficieat speed to suggest that he would have been hard to dispose of. Jewel 'Wood won the. Awapuni Handicap from Peace and Prince Burlington with a lot in hand. The son of Jewel Chimes went to the front in the back 'straight, and drew right away from the rest of the field, TSace easily defeating Prince Burlington for second money. Avenue mixed his gait soon alter the start, and interfered with Blue King, • who fell, and gave his rider, W. Toon, a severe shaking There were only six starters in the Palmerston North Handicap. Lady Nan and Nigliboi7i_lost ground at the start, and after Peterson 7iaJ led for five furlonga»Lady Nan took charge and, elthough challenged by Highborn, won with a lot in hand. Pactolus trotted much better in harness than in saddle, but failed to sustain his effort in the concluding stages of tho race. Peterson, Miss Pirate, and Bio Grande broko rcpaatedly, and finished a long way behind tho placed horses. The ecratobinjj pen was freely used in tho President's Handicap, Tim "Wilkin, Taikorea, Saints Bell, Waiteranui, Belle Logan, and Mary Hill declining their engagements. Lady Pointer «nd Onyx each carried over £IO9O, .with the coupled horses, Warlock and Lovelock, the best backed* of the others. Tho race was robbed of considerable interest, as Rita Eye broke badly after going three furlongs, and Warlock collided with her, thus interfering with Ben Lomond and others, and a hundred yards further on The Bath fell and Nelson Derby collided with him, G. Craw, driver of tho latter, breaking his leg. Lady Pointer buckled her sulky wheel, and was pulled up. Onyx also suffered, as, alio was sent wido on the outside of the field, and was forced to cover o. lot of extra ground. The winner, Phil Smith, did not begin any too well, but, patiently driven, came.-, fast in the concluding stages, and beat Onyx, who tired over the .last furlong. Ben Lomond made a good recover}- from the first accident, and with a clear passage would probably have won, as he finished very' fast in third place. SOUTH CANTERBURY J.C.'S WINTER MEETING. v.
