CHINESE MEDICINE.
At the Tamworth (NiS.W.) Police Court, Jack George, a Chinese doctor, | was charged with having sold a certain i liquor, to wit,- Chinese wine, in a house in Peel street, Tamworth,' without holding a license authorising him to sell I under the Liquor Act of 1912. The defendant pleaded not guilty. The police evidence showed that possession was taken of'3lß bottles of liquor. The police gave Ah Joe, a Chinese labourer residing in Sydney, a £1 note?, and sent him into defendant's residence. All Joe came out with a botttle of Chinese wine. Defendant told tho police he sold it as Chinese medicine with herbs. Tho police found six tumblers_ on the table, and one contained a liquid which tho police alleged 1 was wine. A bottle of Chinese wine was sent to Mr Dolierty, Government analyst at Sydney. The Government analyst's certificate wa.s tendered in evidence. 'lt stated that tho bottle was full of an alcoholic liquor, of a strength exceeding that of ordinary whisky. It contained 50.3 per cent, absolute alcohol by Volume, which was equivalent to 11.3 degrees under proof. Defendant withdrew his plea of not guilty and pleaded guilty. Evidence was given that he boro an excellent character, and has been an eaniest ,worker for the hospital and other charitable institutions. His collections amounted '• to hundreds of pounds a year. Defendant was fined £3O, with £l3 los 8d costs, the fine to be paid by instalments of £lO eafc-h. All the liquor found on the premises was confiscated.
