Bailey stated that on Monday night Burke had prevented an elderly seaman from leaving his quarters in tho ship, arid he had interfered on the old man's behalf, whereupon Burke) knocked him down and kicked; him about the face and body. Tha ißench imposed a lino of £5, half lo go to Bailey. Joseph Moran and John Conner, two stokehold bands in the. American steamer Morris- ! town, were jointly charged with assaulting I Pedro Diaz, a • Spaniard. Both pleaded not I guilty. Constable- Irwin. Tho Bench soid it was fortunate tiiai the chief engineer had bean able to stop the trouble, otherwise there might havr been a murder.
