DAVIS CUP CONTESTS. SHALL AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND SEPARATE? (rBOM OUR OVT.V CORRESPONDENT.) SYDNEY, April 6.' Tennis authorities in America (sayß a writer in the Melbourne "Argus") predict a split between Australia and New Zealand, who have been joined as "Australasia" in the Davis Cup contests un till now. There aremany enthusiasts in Australia who agree with this view. They pay full tribute to the great services of the late Tony 'Wilding in the capture and retention of the Davis Cup, but they point out that present conditions indicate that Australia will carry the burden for some time to come. The New Zealand, champion. Ollivier, was hopelessly outclassed at the last Championship Meeting, held in Melbourne, and a team oi >'*ew South 'Wales players—not one of whom had any pretensions to a place in the 'Davis Ctip team — had no difficulty in beating New Zealand in the matches played after the Davis Cup contest. Canada and South Africa are already entrants for the Cup honours, and it seems feasible that the time has come for the Commonwealth and Dominion to compete as separate countries. Although "W. Tilden and W. Johnson won the Davi3 Cup for America (says this writer) apparently they did not, take the Cup back J with them. The New York "Evening Post" ■ relates how the Australasian Lawn Tennis Association failed to send the Cup by the Ventura, "Is is to be inferred," asks the paper, "that Mr Hicks and his confreres of the ; Australasian Association were eo sure of retaining the massive bowl through the prowess of Brookes and Patterson that they neglected to box it and prepare it for shipment before the match was played? It is more charitable to assume that they were so busy entertaining the team manager, Sam Hardy, and his proteges in Australia, that there was no time to attend to small details." LINWOOD CLUB. At a meeting of the committee of the Linwood Tennis Club, held last night, it was decided to havo the courts renovated and top-dressed forthwith in order-that no damage may be caused to the surface of the courts by the coming frosts. Other improvements to the courts were also authorised. It was decided to issue a challenge to the Avonside Tennis Club to play an match, on a date suitable to both parties, the teste to comprise men's and ladies' singles and doubles, the strength of each team' to b© by" mutual arrangement. The matter of holding a club dance- was discussed, and the proposal approved, and a special sub-committee was sot up to make all arrangements, the date of the dance to be some time in May. . Mi- S. Field, one of the leading players of the club, wrote offering a donation of £1 Is to a fund to be raised to purchase a silver cup for men's handicap singles. The offer was accepted, with thanks, and the secretary was instructed to invite all club members to assist in raising a' sufficient amount to procure a suitable cup. Arrangements were made for playing return matches with Little River and Rangiora. DARFIELD v. GREENDALE.
