LIQUOR IN KING COUNTRY.
A LAEOE "CARGO" INTERCEPTED (fMSS ASSOCIATION- TXLEORAM.) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 14. In the Magistrate's Court this morning, Frederick Volker appeared before MrT. A. B. Bailey, S.M., on several charges arising out of taking into Uw proclaimed area of the King Country 131 bottles of whisky. A plea of guilty was entered on the charges of keeping liquor for sale and of failing to give his name and address to the publican when ordering tho liquor. Police Inspector Hutton said the d«~ fondant had been working at Awakino for the Public Works Department. Oil March 4th last, while driving from Tongaporutn to Awakino, Constable Blaikio intercepted tho defendant, who had some sacks in a trap, and when asked what the cargo was, he replied "Vegetables." This did not satisfy tile constable, who seized the bags, which contained 131 bottles of whisky. It*. spector Hutton said the police had complaints of this sort of thing, and "cargo. running" was being carried on from , the sea. from To Kuiti, and from this side of the district, but the chancel of detection wcro very remote. Tht* taking of such a largo quantity of liquor into a proclaimed area was t> serious matter, and if a man eonld pat j down £72 for tho liquor ho eonld pay I a substantial fine. Nothing else w*| known against the accused, but other people in" the district wcro carrying oft the traffic. , Tho Court convicted the accused oft the charge of keeping liquor for safe, and imposed a fine of £2O and f costs. , On tho" charge of failing to giro ml name and address to the publican when purchasing the liquor, a conviction HI recorded, without a penalty.
