Something in' the nature of a record was es'tablished by the fact that the whole of the ship's complement signed on again. The East Coast steamer Kanna is due at Wellington to-day from Auckland via JJapier. She will leave' Wellington to-morrow lor Dunedin direct, omitting Lyttelton. Tho Wakatu is to sail this afternoon for Kaikoura and Wellington. The Cygnet' is to leave here to-night for Kaikoura. The Poherua, at Greymouth, and the Kahika, at Westport, were reported to be still bar-bound yesterday, and it was doubtful if they would get away last night. The Kamona and the Kakapo, both with timber from Greymouth, will now bo here on Monday and Wednesday respectively. The Baden Powell is due here to-day from Wellington, and is to sail on the return trip to-morrow. .... The Blackball Company's hulk, Wai-iti, will be docked this week for cleaning and painting. • Tho Joan Craig arrived in the stream from Clarence River yesterday morning, and berthed at noon. She has a full cargo of hardwood for the Harbour Board. On her first visit for: .many months, owing to having been held up by the recent shipping strike in Australia, the Huddart-Parker steamer Westralia arrived at Lyttelton shortly after noon vesterday from Melbourne via Wellington. After discharging 180 tons of cargo at. Lyttelton, . including .transhipments ex. the Rudelsbury, Bulleren, and Omar, the vessel will sail for Dunedin today, and is expected to leave Bluff on Satur,day for Melbourne. Since the Westralia was last here there have been several changes, iu ths officers aboard. Captain J. D. Mortis is still ill command, and hoi has tho following officers with him:—First, Mr T. Laidlaw; second, Mr E. Phill ; p; third, Mr A. Simmons ; chief. engineer, Mr 'i'. McAlurtrie; second, Mr A. Kendall; third, Mr P. Rayburn; fourth, Mr H. Barrett; purser, Mr C. Hodgnian; assistant purser, Mr H. Stub-, bingg; wireless operator, Mr W. T. Ryan; chief steward, Mr F. Bowditeh; second, Mr S. Roberts. The New Zealand Shipping Company's new steamer Piako, at present under charter to the Federal Line, i 3 due here about Wednesday next from Wellington to discharge Liverpool cargo. Messrs Kinsey and Co. are tho local agents. The Karanga is to leave Wellington tomorrow for London, \ia Panama. The S.S. and A. Line advise that tho lonic left Balboa on Saturday last for Wellington, where she is due on April 3Cth. The Mahia.left the samo port on the tamo day for Port Chalmers, and is due there on May Ist. Capain E. Eden \&s left the Invercargill owing to illness, and the mate, Mr R. Hart, has been, appointed to the command of the vessel. Mr J». Owen has joined the ship as mate. Mr C. Naismith has joined ths Invercargill as engineer, vice Mr W. Naismith, who has joined the Blenheim as engineer ia place of Mr J. Dalziel. Mr P. Trevithick has signed on the Waverley as mate in place of Mr J. W. Crotty. Mr J: McLean, first engineer of the Huia, has left that vessel, and Mr G. P. Finlayson has joined in his stead.
Mr Jacobseri, engineer of the Echo, has left that vessel. Mr A. T. Simmons has joined the Wcstralia as third officer. Mr Simmons was hi tho Western Ocean run, but came out on tho new Huddart-Parkor step.mer Nairana, as third officer. Mr T. Philip has been promoted to second officer, and Mr T. Laidlaw has moved up to chief officer in place of Mr A. Mclntyre, who has been transferred to the Nairana. The Ruapehu left hero yesterday afternoon for Wellington to complete loading for London. She is to Bail on Tuesday next for London, via Panama. She took from Lyttilton 37*7 bales of wool, 9989 boxes butter, 322 casks of tallow, and. sundries. A RECORD CARGO. The Union Company's steamer Wnitomo left Lyttelton last night with the largest cargo which has over been loaded at this port for Auckland. The cargo comprised 7000 tons, all of it, with tho exception of a few tons, being produce. Six thousand tons of grain, in sacks, was the main item, the balance being made up of flour. The Katoa, which left Lyttelton tho previous day for Auckland, took 2000 tons of produce, and •the Kamo sailed just over a week ago with 2000 tons for the same port. The sum of £17,600 for salvage services was awarded on February 28th by the President of the Admiralty Division to the Pacifio Steam Navigation Company's liner Huanchaco for helping the British Peer, a London oil .tanker, laßt January. The first-named ship towed the other 1500, miles in the North Atlantic during very bad weather, and in doing so was occupied iot thirteen days. The British Peer was thus eirabled to reach Barrow, to which port Bhe w-.vj bound irom the. United States with a cargo of motor spirit. The- value o£. the salved ship, including cargo and freight, was' eaid to be about £350,000. On January 2ndthe British Peer sent out wireless messages that she had lost her propsller, and was helpless in mid-Atlantic. The Huanchaco, about seventy mil* away,- picked up tho appeal, divertedher-course, found-the disabled,vessel, and with some dimcuity 'took her in tow. The President said the help of the Huanchaco was -rendered with conspicuous abimy, extraordinary tenacity, ana considerable pluck.-, He,apportioned the award as follows: £13,250 to tho owners of tho jj-uafiohaco, £IOOO to the master,' and £3250 to the crew, with double shares to the chief officer and' chief engineer. NEW COASTAL SHIPPING COMPANY. (PKESS association telegram.) DUNEDIN, April 13. The necessary capital has been assured to float a company to operate a' line of cargo steamers between Dunedin and way ports, including Wellington, with Wanganui as the other terminal port.
