• There- are- some voracious profiteers' in Germany. A Berlin telegram to the "Times" says:—"A delivery of oats arrived in Waltershausen, Saxony, for distribution by the local authorities among cattle dealers. In two of the bags were slips of paper with words, 'I was paid 20 marks 50 pfennigs (about Is 8d) for these oats. "Will the buyer kiudlv inform ine how much he has to pay for them?' The buyer who received the slip of paper sent him a reply, stating that the price, <■ wit« freight, demanded by the Com Distribution Centre, was 175 marks (about 14s 6d) per cwt. The local authorities appear to be affected by the general profiteering fever, and have no doubt completed a very successful 'Schieb.' At the 43rd Salon of Aviculture, which was opened a few weeks ago in the Grand Palais, Pari?, the exhibit which attracts the greatest number of visitors is the cage in which a number of war heroes are shown. These are the "aces" among the Verdun carrier pigeons', who went right, through the war, many of them earning the right to wear a golden bracelet round their leg. Tho "Diploma of the King of Honour" of No. 1881 G, bears the following mention:—"Ensured the 'communications of Major Eaynal, defender of Tort Vaux, at the moment when his invested troops were deprived of all other means of communication. This mi suite of unfavourable weather 'conditions." Ex-Alderman John Ashley Kilvert, J.P.. one of the few surviving members of the Balaclava charge of the "Six Hundred," and who rived at Wednesbury, Staffs., left £4199 6s 3d. He was latterly living retired after carrying on business as a pawnbroker. He left his Crimean medal and Turkish medal to the Leicester Art Gallery, as well as the sword he used in the charge. , t
