■■ —» : — MEETING OF LEAGUE. A meeting of tho Port Christ church Learue was held last night, Dr. Thacker, Mayor of Christchurch, presiding. The chairman said the Bill constituting S Lyttelton Harbour Board district between the Waimakariri and the Rakaia was introduced during the 1920 session, but could not be dealt with as it had not complied with the Standing Orders. The Bill would be introduced again during the next session, and all formalities would be complied with. He felt sure that the new City Council would be strongly in favour of the Port Christchurch scheme; but it was for the League to work to secure the return of candidate's who supported the aims of the League. ■'.,,, , j Mr W. J. Jenkm said the League had met with ill-fortune in ite recent endeavours, and it seemed questionable whether it was worth while going on with the Bill. He doubted whether the League had made much headway during the last two years, and support 'had failed in the most unexpected quarters. ~ , ■, Mr W. J. Franklm said the League should concentrate its efforts on tho Lyttelton Harbour Board election. 'Mr Jenkin said the City Council had power to construct harbour worfca on a tidal river, and the League consequently should extend its efforts to the City Council' election, as well as the Harbour Board. Mr H. M. Jones offered to contest the Ashburton seat on the Harbour Board, as a Port Christchurch candidate. ■ ' . . -,«■ T It was decided to inform Mr Jones that he would have the support of the League if he stood for election. The following condidates were selected for the Harbour Board election : Citv: Dr. Thacker and Messrs Geo. Scott* H. B. 'Sorensen, and E. J. Howard. . . _ Lvttelton-Combined District: Mr T. H. Harker. „ „ „ Ashburton Borough: Mr H. M. Jones. ... It was decided to put a question to all candidates for the City Council, as to how they stood on the Port Ohristchurch issue.' •...'• , .' ~ Mr T. H. Harker wrotetendenng his resignation as hon. secretary, a position which he filled since 1918. He said he was convinced more strongly than ever that a harbour in the Estuarywould The the, best means of. gyring the community, of Christchurch better access to the sea than it at present possessed.
