NEGOTIATIONS WITH SEAMEN'S UNION. • THE "SCRAP OF PAPER" POLICY. (B,y Cable—Press Association—Copyright.) and N.Z. Cable Association.l (Received April Bth, 7M n.m.l SYDNEY, April 8. Negotiations have been proceeding for some time between the Australian Workers', Union and the Federated Seamen's Unions, witfi a view to amalgamation. It is now stated that the negotiations havo reached a deadlock, owing to the seamen definitely refusing to bar coloured labour from membership of their union.
According to tho official report of tho Australian -Workers' Union Conference, Mr Walsh, president of the Seamen's Union, in a sneech declared that the seamen would not have arbitration. They held there was nothing to arbitrate about. They would ouiy accept such compromises as they were driven to, holding to their agreements as long as they were suitable, and breaking them as soon as the circumstances of tho moment demanded. If revolutionary exigencies demanded' it, even the existing constitution of the Seamen's Union would be scrapped. Until tho Australian Workers' Union was prepared to accept views similar to those of the Seamen's Union, there was no hone of tho seamen joining the proposed union. MORE RESOLUTIONS. (Received April Bth. 7.35 p.m.') SYDNEY, April 'B. The Labour Conference adopted a resolution that it bo an.instruction, to the Government to bring in a 44 hours' week for all industries. Other resolutions favoured fixing tho mandatory ago for leaving school at sixteen, that an allowance be provided undor the Education Act for all families up to the age of sixteen, and that University fees be abolished. The Conference has concluded.
