Mr W. H. Millward, of "Wellington, has joined.the local hoard of directors of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. Mr Raymond Fayette Stover, Cana-dian-American author, of New \ork Citv, and Son of tho well-known Canadian capitalist, Samuel Btovor, lias arrived in Aueklnnd. accompanied by Mr Alexander McKay Smith Paddocks, ot Boston, son of the Uev. Ernest Moorh.end Paddock, of Cambridge. Mr Stover is gathering material for a new hook. Mr M. A. Philips, well-known throughout New Zealand as general manager for roanv years tor Messrs NPeabody and Co., of New York, is at present'in the Dominion on a bnct visit, and is staving at the Oarer don Hotel, Christchur'eh.' He has been resident in England for the past nine years, ;;nu achieved considerable fame there in connexion with his wonderful French intensive garden near Tonbridge, m Kent. An article describing this garden appeared in "The Press" on June 21st ot last year.
A pleasant little function took place at T. Armstrong and Co.. Ltd.'s, on Thmredav, when a presentation was made to"Mr .T. H. Glasson, who is retiring after I<J years' service with the firm. Mr H. M. Miles, on behalf of the employees, said that they could notlet Mr (J'lasson retire -without giving him some little token showing the esteem in which he was held by them all, and snid. he had much pleasure in presenting Mr Glasson, on behalf of the employees, with a solid leather suitcase,, suitably inscribed. Mr '"Leonard Lloyd, son of Mr T. Lloyd, of Napier, until twelve months ago chief electrician for J as. J. Nivon and Co., Ltd.,' but now of California, flias been promoted from operator to chief electrical engineer of the "Big Bend" hydro-electric power station and all transmission lines in and around Las Plumas, of the Great "Western Power Co., Lr.s Plumas, California. The Big Bend hydro station is one of the largestin the world, being 120,000 h.p. at 1G5,01X) volts. Mr Lloyd /is not yefc 21 years of age, and reached his present position after only eight rcontihs' service with the Great Western Power Co. He served his time with Messrs Jas. J. Nivcn and Co. at their Napier branch.
