It was reported at last nightf ing of the General Committee .of..'the' Canterbury branch of the-Navy League •that three ex-naval men had applied for work-ab the' League's office. The- secretary (Mr C. J. Treleaven) 'said that ho communicated with the Immigration Department, and had received a reply that the men ought not to have loft Wellington: work had been found- for men who had in that city: The men told "Mr'Treleaven. that they had been offered' work at. flax-cutting at 12s a ton, but.they did, hot accept it. The .League hadi paid .the passage of one of the men to Wei-; lington, as he thqught he could get a job on a Home boat. / Mr J. J. Dougall; It isn't very satis,factory that men should be brought, out here and sent right back again. ."' Replying to Mrs Blunt, the secretary • said that the men had good credentials. A discussion ensued on the mean's that could be adopted to find employment for ex-naval men, in the course of which it was stated that, ex-naval men, though "handy men," did not have a trade at their'fingers' ends. One suggestion was that work, might be found for them on back-country stations. ■■■.." Mr J. J. Dou£jall: They are putting men off wholesale, and "leaving the sheep to look after themselves. ; . Mrs Blunt referred to the fact that at Home people who could not get women domestics, employed ex-soldiers. She suggested that positions might be found for ex-naval men as school caretakers. It was stated that the League gave financial assistance in oases where it was required. The question of taking further stens to provide work for ex-naval men was referred to the chairman, the hon. treasurer (Mr H. S. Batchelor),. and the secretary (Mr C. J. Treleaven).
