NOTES ON THE RACING. (SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS'.") The weather was dull for the opening day of the meeting. Rain- had fallen overnight, but only sufficient to lay tho dust on the roads, and to freshen up the racing track and lawns. ■ • ■ , Fisher, Whipcord, King Star, and Lord Nagar weie tho only runners in the Jumpers' Flat Race. The event was fun, at a crawl for the first half-mile, when Fisher, who was out in front, gradually drew away until he had an advantge of many lengths from Kin" Star and" Whipcord, who had to be hunted along to get up to him.' Once they had caught him he was steadied, and the pace became slow again, with Lord JSagar in front. In the sprint home, -Fisher had too much speed, and won easily. It -was a wretchedly ndden race on the part of several riders. ~..., Duo, .Gasbag. Halifax, and lustowel were the only runners "for the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes. Duo stripped well, but was wearing heavy bandages in front. He moved freely in his preliminary, and pulled up sound. Gasbag, who sweated a lot while in the birdcage, went rather short in his preliminary. Duo was made an odds-on favourite, and the race was never in doubt, for; always well-placed in behind the leader, Listowel, who set a sterling pace, Duo ranged alongside five furlongs from home, and soon 1 had the Absurd 'colt's measure, while Gasbag came under the whip, and beat Listowel. With Duo out of the race Listowel would probably have won. Some very nice youngsters paraded for the Plunket Nursery Handicap,. but none looted better class than Anomaly. He got away very badly, and struggled through like a good horse, to finish within three lengths of the winaieT. Absurdum confirmed his Christchurch running by winning easily, while Purple Spur' ran a wretched race. After getting away just behind the leaders, he finished a bad seventh. ' The Thompson Handicap was a great race, the winner Rouen owing his position to H. Gray's fine handling, A. G. Dixon, -who rode Askari, not having sufficient strength over tho last few strides. The start was good, but Bonetter with Bagdad, was immediately chopped back. At different stages of the race Royal Stag, Foo Chow, Tigritiya, Solfanello, Godden Bubble, Bagdad, and Truthful all looked possible winners, and
they all finished close up. Blackmail ran a bad last. The start for the Challenge Stakes was perfect. Rational at once went out, and led from Silver Link, with Pluto alongside. Turning for home, Rational looked to have the race won, as Silver Link was being l hard ridden. At the distance McCbrmac put tho stick on Rational, who curled up a bit, but when straightened up finished gamely, yet had no chance with Silver Link, who, though only a head to the good at the post, won comfortably. Pluto looked hopelessly beaten two furlongs from home, hut struggled on gamely, and was finishing as fast as anything when the post was reachecf. The time lmin 25seo is a New Zealand record, the Australasian record of lmin 24Jsec, made at Randwidk, being held by Remnon. The Silverstream Handicap resolved itself into a match between Sunny Loch and Malaga, the former wimaing by inches. Egotism found her big weight too much, and stopped badly two furlongs from home. Ohrysostum had been going so well on the tracks that his' admirers wouM not hear of his defent in the Railway. Handicap, and he was backed down to a very short price. He. was always well placed just behind Inah, who piloted the field, while the ultimate winner, Silver Peak, was being hard ridden two and a half furlongs from home. Onco in the straight Silver Peak put in a good run, and was eased over the last furlong. Inah. ran a great race, but Chrysostom does not appear to be very solid. Silver Peak looks likely to win another race before returning to her home. E'leus was last alt the way. Fa|brinade looked to have tho Tinaiori Handicap won just before the distance, but he faded when challenged, and was lucky to get third. Roscday, had ho not got chopped back just below the distance, must have won. Mcsthenes was first by a short length from Makere, who was a head In front bf Fabrinade, with Roseday a head further Bacik. H. Gray, rider of Absurdum in the Plunket Nursery Handicap, was fined £lO for crossing. HANDICAPS FOR SECOND DAY. SECOND JUMPERS' FLAT HANDICAP, of 350 sovs; lm and 3f—Pacific .
