CANTERBURY SPORTS BODIES.
WELT ABE 'ASSOCIATION FOEMED. Fifteen delegates from various sports bodies, including two ladies, representing the Ladies' Hockey Association, were present at a meeting on Wednesday night 10 coutiie; llie constitution of tho Canterbury Sports Bodies Welfare Association. Mr T. E. Kobson was voted to the chair. It was reported that four sports bodies had decided definitely to join the AssociaA .number of delegates present said that their bodies would affiliate, others stating that there had not been, enough notice given for tho matter to be considered. "When the rules and constitution were submitted for approval, Mr W. E. Moyle, speaking as a member of the sub-committee that drafted them, complained of the absence of Mr A. L. Chappell, who, he said, should have been present to explain them to the meeting. Proceeding, Mr Moyle said that the proposal to form tho Association was a good one in the interests of 6port. Unfortunately, however, there seemed to'be some apathy regarding tie movement at present, due, no doubt, to the off season. A discussion took place as to whether, in view of the poor support that was at present forthcoming it would not be advisable to postpone the meeting. • This was opposed by Mr Moyle, who considered that Buch a step would create a bad impression limong the different spores bodies. In supporting Mt Moyle's suggestion that the meeting should proceed, Mr W. J. Walter aaid that such an Association was necessary to push for better grounds for sports and pastimes. At present there were some good "sports" on the Domain Board and City Council, but these gentlemen needed backing up. He was still in favour of a sports candidate for the Council. The best- "sport" in the Domain Board was Mr W. H. Winsor, who, ivnfortunatelv, would lose his seat because of the amalgamation of Spreydon with the city. It was decided that the meeting Bhould proceed. Mr Brunton (Canterbury Swimming Association) expressed himself as opposed to putting up a sport i candidate for the City Council, but was in favour of questions being put to candidates. Mr W. L. Minson said that it was rather ambitious of ihe Association to put questions to candidates, who when they heard of the strength of the Association might put the question in the waste paper basket. The rules and constitution were adopted. Tho election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr W. Simpson; vice-president, Mr T. E. Bob3on; secretary and treasurer, Mr P. C. Lucas (pro tem); executive, Messrs B. J. McKenna, W. Moyle, P. Menzies, G. H. Duggan, R. B. Ward, aad' A. E. McPhail. It was decided, on the motion of Mr A. E. Hooper, to recommend that tho executive should appoint a deputation to approach the City Council, if necessary, after its election, and prior to the appointment of the Reserves Committee, in i tho matter of the various sports.
