PEACE TREATY.
ATTITUDE OF AMERICA. STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT HARDING. (By Cable—Press Association—Copyrifkl) (Renter's TolegTwns.) (Received April 6th, 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 5. President Harding told a gathering of journalists that there was no practical way in which the United States could ratify the Treaty of Versailles, but on the other hand there was no need for tho immediate passage of the Knox peace resolution.
Tho Administration would have to move cautiously and prudently to solve the situation. He insisted he had no definite plan, and declined to discuss a possible programme. It is expected that the entire subject of America's international relations will be dealt with in the President's Message to Congress next week.
THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS. (Received April 6th, 7.40 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 5. It is understood that at Senator MeCbrmick's dinner in honour of M. Viviani M. Stephen Lauzanne, editor of the "Matin," in a speech said France feared God and the United States Senate, and realised that the Senate at the present moment was "nearer the earth and more active."
M. Viviani told Senators, in replying to aue9tions, that if the League of Nations declined to recognise the recent Treatv with Poland, France would withdraw from the League. This delighted the "bitter-enders," who think it sustair.9 the argument that the League is unworkable. PRANCE AND GERMANY. (Received April 6th, 7.40 p.m.) PARIS, April 6. M. Briand reiterated France's determination to compel Germany to pay for war damages. Germany would find the means to pay when the Allies substituted acts for words. The supreme moment was approaching, and France was determined to have the last word. Germany had been fully warned, and France was determined to exact her due forcibly if necessary.
