PRICE OF BUTTER.
NEOOTIATIONS STILL IN PROGRESS. (SMCIAI, TO "the press.") \ WELLINGTON, April 5. The new negotiations regarding butter are not likely to reach finality much before the end of the week. Several meetings of producers are being held to consider ,the ' Government's proposals. The Government's view is that the retail price of butter,- without a subsidy, ought not to exceed 2s 3d per lb. The latest London advice is that the wholesale price of New Zealand first and second gradeß has been fixed 'temporarily at 262s per cwt., with the prospect of a further decline shortly. This is estimated to be equivalent to 2s lid per lb f.o.b. here. 'The British authorities are selling for 2s 4Jd per lb butter for which they paid 2s 6d in New Zealand. A, local export firm is advising its clients that it doubts'if butter exported during the winter would show as good a return as.if it was sold locally at 1b 11 Jd at the factory door.
