LYTTELTON NEWS.

[ ♦ SEAMEN'S INSTITUTE. The past week has been a busy one at the 'Seamen's Institute. On Easter Monday a picnic for oversea seamen was held at TDian:ond Harbour, where an enjoyable doy was spent, the amusements consisting of football and games, for which prizes were awarded to tho various winners. The catering was in the hands of_ Mesdames Green, Lane, Hatchwell, ond Pitcaithly. assisted by Mies'ea Clark and Pitcaithly. Gifts were "received from Captain Andrews, of the Raranga, and Messrs Pitcaithly and A. D. Hamilton, which contributed largely to the success of the picnic. The seamen were very appreciative of the efforts put forth on their behalf. On Thursday over on* hundred seamen attended the weekly concert, the programme and supper being provided by tho local Ladies' Guild. Among those contributing l items were Misses Brightmore. Chappell, Black, Owens, Pitcaithly, and seamen. OBITUARY. A very- old Canterbury resident. Mrs Thomas Hough, passed peacefully away at the residence of her doughter (Mrs J. Bradbury). Exeter street, on Thursdav evening. Thf late Mrs Hough arrived in Canterburv some two years'"before the arrival of the first four ships. "With her narents. Mr and Mrs Robert Allan, Mrs Honsn landed at Port Levy from, the ten-ton cutter Sunply, after a voyaee of three weeks from "Wellington. Later the family removed to Lyttelton, where Mr Allan built the first wharf. The deceased, was married to Mr Thomas Hough, of Nelson, who predeceased her three years ago. Mts Hough is survived by two children. Mrs J. .Bradbury, Lvttelton, and Mr M. J. A. Hough, of Christchurch. LOCAL BODIES' ELECTIONS. Mr F. G. Norton will be a candidate for the Lyttelton district at the forthcoming Harbour Board election. Mr Norton is at present a member of the Lyttelton Borough Ccxtncil, and has decided not to stand again for that body, nor will" he seek re-dlection on the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Bo aid:
