DUMPING OF OBJECTIONABLE MATTER.
BUKWOOD RESIDENTS' PROTEST. Protests against the dumping of nightsoil and other objectionable matter on a reserve at Buxton's corner, Shirley, by the City Council, were mido at a meeting of Bivrwood residents held last night. The meeting was convened by the Buiwood Progressive Aseojedation and m presided over by Mr H. Rowso. ,
Tho chairman said that the dumping of objectionable matter in the district liad been going on for _ a long time, but until recently the residents had thought that only such things as 'tins were being put on tho reserve, but of Into the position had become more Berious. Tho City Council had been driven from other districts tmd was now dumping matter injurious to health on tho reserve in question. The Btirwood Progressive' Association waa out to' fight the matter to the end.
Mr J. Wilson, rice-president of the Association, said, that he had investigated the dumping of refuse <m the reserve at Buxton's corner,' and had found that uight«oil had been regularly dumped. On a recent evening he had eeen a dead horee buried there not more than lOin deep. Ho thought it was timo the matter waa stopped. Tho Waimairi County Council had a by-law prohibiting tho dumping of objectionable matter, and thin should be put in operation immediately against. tho City Council. In answer to a, question, the chairman said he thought the by-law only prohibited the (dumping of matter injurious to health. Tho Health Inspector had seen the flJsot and would probably talte action, though when tbey were up against the City Council they i were up against a strong body. The residents, if possible, ehould endeavour to havo the dumping of anything on the reserve prohibited as the spot waa an eyesore and likely to depreciate tho valuo of property in the vicinity. I Mr /Wilson moved that a deputation should ' wait on the Waimari County Council at its next meeting an regard to the matter. Mr W. J. Walter, a member of the Waimairi County Council, said that he thought the Council would stand by tho Buiwood residents. The district should not be made a .dumping ground for the city as it had been in the past. ~,,,,, -Mr Wilson's motion was seconded by Mr r. Shiirpe, and carried unanimously. The following were the deputation:—Messrs H. Bowso, J. Wilson, ond G. Robinson.'
