ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS. OTAGO ANP WELLINGTON TIE. The Ihter-TJniversity tournament was continued yesterday, ■when the athletic championships were decided at Lancaster Pork. Koen interest was taken in the meeting, and there was a large attendance of the public, tho takings at the gate- amounting to £llß. Tho weather was dull and rather cold, but tho conditions, if not all that the spectators could desire, were excellent for tho competitors. The standard shown in all tho events wa6 very high, as may bo gathered from the, fact that no fewer than threo records were brokoii. L. A. Tracy, a fine young sprinter from Victoria Collogo (Wellington) won the -20 yds Championship" in the fast time of '22 4-oth sec, lowering the existing, record of 23 2-oth sec, established by that magnificent sprinter, tho lato. ltonald Opie, in 1010, and equalled by Tracy himself last year. xraey followed up this performance by winning the 100 yds Championship in 10 l-sth sec. only 1-oth sec outsido the record, arid the 440 yds Championsip in 52see, which is 3-sth sec outside trio record. Incidentally, he, was not in tho best of condition. He is as yet practically at the beginning of his track career, and if he keeps on as he is doing ho should bring new honours'to New Zealand. Trio 220 yds record was also beaten by W. Perry, of Auckland, in the second heat, which was won in 23sec. The second record was established by M. It. Grierson, of Auckland, in tho 880 yds Championship, which he won in 2min 3sec, beating the time of 2min 3 l-sth see, pub up by A. S. Henderson (Victoria College), in 1902. A. Jackson, of Victoria College, reduced the 440 yds Hurdles record from 62sec to 60 l-sth sec, after a magnificent performance. Tho running and jumping throughout was of a very high order, and every event was full of interest. So keen was the comTxjtition that Victoria College and Otago tied for the Championship Shield, and Auckland wore only one point behind them. Points ,for the Shield counted two for a first and one for a second and with only one event to be decided, the 440 yds Hurdles. Otago had 13 points, Auckland 12, and "Wellington 11. Tho Wellington hurdler, Jackson, won in record time, and it looked as though tu'o Otago men and an Aucklander would fight out second place, when Malfroy, of Canterbury College, sprang a surprise and secured second position, incidentally registering the. only point scored by Canterbury. The result was that Otago and Victoria College each obtained 13 points, and Auckland 12. Canterbury College made" amends by winning the relay race and the img-of-war, but neither of those OTents carried points for the Shield. . Following wcro the various results:— Championship Events.
