BOXING.
— 4 AMATEUR TOURNAMENT. The Clmsieivunih. Sports Club continued its amateur boxing tournament' in tlia Choral Hall last evtmn?, when the attendance. wis iuth<?r i>oor, much lc:s than the p[)orf of l.h* evening mcritwl. Mr J?. A. ChalTey acted as reforcs-, with 'Messrs T. K. Kobson and H. Harsh as jud-sjes, and Mr R. Bcmio.iW ta timekeeper. Two novice events, onoh of 3-minnk> rounds, two special Louts each of eix 2-ininuto rounds-, and i.iiotbor 'special bout of four 2-mimite rounds were decided, and the boxing right through ivas or an interesting, nn.d in soaio cases clever, nature. Following 1 are details of it!io various events: — >'OVICES. (lOst Clb Class.) Semi-final—l 3.' Turner (Ost Sjrlb) v. L. J. r'arirfir (lOst 32!b). Interest, in the bout v;r,s spoiled by tho great amount of clinch-' ing", Turner being warned more than once for holding. Farmer had much the b?t-*er of a tauie display, wild received Itho verdict, and also -tho final, Waugli being unable to ( box wing to a brol:en wrist. (Sat-Clb Class.) Final—Fraser (Bst s';lb) v. C. Envin (Sat 4lb. Erwiu.had considerable advantage in the re'.ich, though Fraser v.-ae the more powerful of the two. Fraser did most of the leading, and used, particularly, a dangerous right swing, which, however, did not connect. Erwin showed the better .Jefc-noe-, and the "better footwork, and wss by far tho moro scientific of the two. ire teeured a- welldesetrved and popular verdict, 'though ho had to s'.'and tip to a fie roe attack ini the final round, Fraser doing his- best to eccuro a knock-out. (9st 21b Class.) Final —'11. Fraser secured the verdict in the final of tho 9:;t 2lb class, G. A. Clark failing to appear. (Ost 101b C1a53.) Final—C. Waugh, by virtue of his win on Saturday nigh't, wbm J. Miller did not complete his round, was awarded, tho decision. SPECIAL BOUTS. • P. Hanna (Hastings) Ost 9lb J. Hctrick (Christolrurcli) 93 10lb. Han-na is tho Harwke'a Bay lightweight champion, and Hctrick was runner-up at tho last Canterbury championships'. The bout was easily tho Lest of tho evening. Hanna was immediately noticeable for his ole-ver footwork, and for his quickness. In fact, he kept right alitor his man all through the bout; boxing beautifully, and ■using' both hands equally well, though hi 3 blows for tjio most part lacked the power 'to hurt seriously. His defsnco was also superb. Hetrick put up a lemarkably good fight, his blows having plenty of foroe bohind them, though he did not get many through tho clever guard of his opponent. Ho employed chiefly a kind of downward hook, which proved eaey to guard, and had liis blows boon straight he would have done much better. For the first four rounds tho local man stood up to it well, and piled up a, lot of points in the second, but condition told .in tho end, and Hanna eecured the only possible verdict. Both men were loudly applauded on leaving tho ring. A. Musson (Christchurch) Ost 13lb v. J. Mitchell (Drmedin) Ost 41 b. Both men are tho champions of their respective provinces. Musson had a big -advantage in height, weight, and reach, but Mitchell mado up for his lack of inches • with any amount of dogg-cd pluok. Tho Dunedin man started oft with great dash, but early in tho first round was temporarily doubled up by a. Mow from Hudson which accidentally went low. Mitchell declined to entertain tho notion cf a win on a foul, and boxed oil, (to the- d«:lis;l>f of the audience. Ho Bliowed much aggressiveness in the first two rounds, but Musson, , boxing very coolly, and using both hands with eSect, had liini badly lattlod in tho ! third and fourth, the. gong an each occasion sounding opportunely, and in tlio fifth Mitchell went down for 8, the gong saving liim again as he roso to hia feet. Musson refrained front punishing his man in tho last, and won easily on pointi. V. Johnston (Sat lib) v. "\V. Howell ("it 3!lb). Johnston is the Canterbury bantam champion,' and Ho,v<~ll wins anuner-up at the , J»t championship meeting. Howell has been unwell of late, but persisted in appearing in the bout, which, was therefore limited to four rounds. Howell, who to much the t smaller man of the two, showed no sign of indisposition in his tactics, which wore. c.f the whirlwind type, with a nasty light swing- behind them, and wont for his man right through. The Lout v.-as full of interest, If not a revelation in 6cieuco, ar.d ithough Johneton fousrht gamely and well, the verdict went to Howell. The decision vas a popu- ' lar one. DEMPSEY v. CARPEXTIEE..
