THE COUNTRY.
I CHEVIOT. At a meeting of the Chovio-b County Council, Mr T. Stephenson, chairman, was nominated as a candidate for .the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board and the Harbour Board. The opening of the tennis courts took place on Saturday under ideal conditions. There was a large attendance of players, including visitors from Spotswood and Domett. In the absence of the president, Mr Bradstock called on Mr Owen, inspector of schools, to officially open the courts. A further meeting of the Ladies' Hockey Club was held last week, when arrangements were made for the forthcoming fete in aid of the furnishings for the new Town Hall. A meeting of ladies has been called t for 27th inst., to organise a Church of England bazaar. Money is urgently needed, so it is hoped that the matter will be taken up as enthusiastically as the previous bazaar was. Messrs Owen and Mayne, school inspectors, are in tho district, and on Friday the Mackenzie School was visited. SHEFFIELD. A sale of cakes, produce, etc., was held recently in the Sheffield Hall in aid of the local Plunket Society, and' resulted in the sum of £20 being added to the funds. At a meeting of tho Society, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to tho Cricket Club for handing over the proceeds of their dance to the Society, and also to Mr Webster for giving the hall free on the occasion. Arrangements were also made for a gathering to be held in the Domain in order to say farewell to Nnrse Mackie, who is leaving shortly to bo married. EANGIOEA. Councillor F; B. Lane has been nominated for election to the Waimakariri Harbour Board to represent tho Rangiora Borough. j OMIHI. A meeting of subscribers to tho soldiers' monument was held, when the balance-sheet was submitted by the secretary, Mr Waugh, and adopted. A very.hearty vote of thanks was passed ; to the committee for their work. As
tbis is the first monument erected in t the "Waipara County, the machine-gun I secured by the Council is to bo placed | beside it. It was unanimously decided to fence the ground at an early date, and a committee was appointed to caxry out this work. SOUTH MAIiVEBN. At the monthly meeting of the Glentunnel School Committee there were present Messrs Ledgard (chairman), Todd (secretary), and Mrs MacLaughlan. The headmaster reported the average attendance for the month to be 65, and the roll number 99. The poor attendance was due to the epidemic of measles which had prevailed throughout the district for several weeks. It was proposed to hold a children's concert at the end ot' the year in aid of the .school fund'?. Tho annual visit ot the medical inspector had taken place during the month. The chairman reported that in conjunction with the headmaster Re had arranged with the local mill-owner to fell certain large pine tree<s in the playground, thus en- j couraging the growth of several beauti- i ful English trees, which were in danger j of The school gardens were in good condition and showed excellent promise for the summer. A ! , large number of young people were prei. sent, and games, competitions and danci 'ing contributed to a very enjoyable programme. The hall was beautifully decorated for the occasion by the members. Mrs Mills acted as M.C., and the music for the dancing was supplied bv Mrs Whalan. On Friday, two of the Glentunnel Masters J. Milne and X?, Pettit. combined the usual commemoration of Guy Fawkes with business for the new Town Hall with the result that the sum of £1 was handed in to the secretary of the Hall Building Committee. The weriod of warm summer weather, which has prevailed in tho district for some time, has been -succeeded during ' the past week by cold winds and clouds.
