The first of the two 10-ton 'Imperial 1 ' Motor Rollers, ordered last Soptetuber by the Christchurch Tram winy Board, tlirough Messrs Andersons Ltd., has arrived in Christchurch, and was put through several tests on Monday morning under the personal supervision of Mr i P.' Turner, the Board's engineer. The test took place on tho piece of liartl tarred macadam road near the Heathcoto Bridge. This machine is one of the latest and ' most up-to-date motor rollers on tho market and is of British manufacture throughout; being built entirely in Aus- ■ tralia. The powerful twin cvljnder engine, running on a low grade Kerosene, when scarifying, had no difficulty in tearing up the hard tarred macadam road, both outside and between the tram rails, to a depth of over six inches with the three tvno scarifier attached to tho machine. " A noticeable feature was tho manner in which the scarifier was attached, all the strain being taken up by powerful springs on a subsidiary frame so that no strain reached the engine and driving gear. After a test lasting over an hour, daring which the machine tore tip a considerable piece of roadway, Mr Turner expressed himself as being well pleased with the nlant. Mr F. Lan.ibeift, District Engineer, Public Works Department, was also present. Messrs Andersons Ltd., of Christchurch, aro the sole agents, and they are experiencing a keen demand for 'Imperial" Motor Rollers and Tractors from local bodies throughout tho country, f CAT REVEALS THEFT. * GERMAN DYE ON HER TAIL. Tho part played in 'the police drama, hy tho tell-tale tail of the wandering cat was related in the Jersey City courts by Mr Prank Stone, a Government detoctive, who 'had been tracing tho stolen dyes. He made his rendezvous m one of tho Hoboken docks yesterday. While he was analysing his facts tho friendly tabby approached and rubbed her back affectionately against the detective's immaculate trousers. He was startled to observe orange stains where the pussy had made contact with his nether garments. j3o hastened to the Government analyst and discovered that the dye was identical with, that for which he was searching. , The final act of the drama showed a police patrol wagfy>n -with detectives surrounding' the tabby's lair, the cellar of a supposedly empty house.* Tho arrest or the thieves and the recovery of the stolen dyes followed witJhin tw» houre.
