He won a member of tho committee of the "Winton Jockey Club and tho Winton ting Club. The cause of death, it is understood, was Bright's disease. Mr G-. N. A struggling mst/ss> of -val-miibile horaofleeli straining eveccy nerve and muscle at the bebest of gaily-liveried riders—a graceful sweep as they round the turn and come towards thousands of Itense or excited spectators— then a, Bymmetryial little fellow swinging a little further to tho oelitre of the course, and cutting down, the leaders <111, alt the diatnnoo, ithe- mighty roar of thousands of voices is proclaiming his victory, and Poitrel has won tho Cup (says a writer in tho Sydney "Daily Telegrapif' of November 3rd). That seems to sum up the ewnlt so far as it intereetg .the sporting publio of New South Wales. Not that he won, but how. That is all they should want to know. When tho first of the well-trained and handsome- contestant® emerged from the paddock, and after the customary preliminaries proceeded elorwly to the barrier, Eurythmic, the supposed invincible, was t(he cynosure of enwry eye. He was eent to his task with the evident good wishes of a inultitudo of frieade, who remembered his previous victories with the pteMuro and satisfaction of those who had invested wisely and well. The "all-red" colours were tho popular colours for once. Other less fancied animals got to the 6tartinsf point with less demonstration and little "fuss. Poitrel ■was tho last to leave tha paddock. Ho walked as docile a-s a sheep .to where hi 9 preliminary was to begin, answered the rein obediently, and went at half pace to the turn. Then ho trotted back to the ,bunch. A few faint hand-claps from a group of Sydney men in one of the stands, and a • spasmodic attempt to do the honours by him spluttered

like- » Trot squib, and tho little cih&p was cent to his trial without disturbing 1 the equanimity of th<? throng. Kann a-quhnir slouched along in Ms customory manner, and the rest- of the bunch, with (lie exception of Salitros, earned nc comment. For a few minutes there was a hush of expectancy, and then a roar, which drowned .the clang of the warning tell, announced that the business, "for which the assemblage had met," had begun. Salitroa immediately went to the frout, and seemed to be> holding his own without effort, whilst liillom was pulling his neck double, to keep him back to hi"? field. Meantime, the horses, -~>n which most attention was foeusscd hod dropped into handy position's as best raited to them. Euvythmic was in about the middle of the field, Poitrol about three lioraes from last, and Kennaqiihair juat behind him. Ecarte, who had a host of friend®, was lying about sixth. The. first bend safely negotiated, <3w» pacn was clapped on, and then began the reaj fight for position. Bracken, who -was riding a patient race, states that at the mils post he received a heavy bump, but, instead of hurting his chances, it worked for the best, as ho found himself, tho next instant, well placed on the Tails. At a mil© nnd a half the all-red jacket of the West Australin beigan to move up rapidly, and thousands roared "Eurvthmic walk® in; Eurythmic wins!" But at this paint the email and impudent chestnut was eeen to leave the rails and come out into the open. The West Australian dropped back, nnd the straight entrance- was by Ent&m'U'S G<nd Queen Comedy. After Clever Jim's chance had been extinguished Poitrel came on. He has a nasty knmck of doing so with his opponents at the end of a long race. He bounded forward, a compact ball of muscle, and fairly galvanised 1 the spectators into enthusiasm. As he caught the leaders just below the distance, the cheering was deatening, and the sportsmanship of' those who .'wtd previously been regarded ad partisan vvas forced to manifest itself, with the result that a regular cyclone of encouragement was hurled a " c * the diminutive chestnut as lie raoefl. for, and first reached the winning post. Both Poitrol and Bracks were mven an oval-ion, which lasted un-til the saddle had Ixen' <taken from the florae's back, and the hardy son of St. Alwyno was taken back to his stall after accomplishing what was considered to OB tho well-nigh impossible, t'raamus' stuck to his task well, and wso on 'J beaiten ofl just wheTe hi® supporters thought ho wo old ho bMiten if h© did fail to deliver the goods. Queom Comedy, with real feminine obstinacy, threatened trouble to the e«nd but caved in after having don© tremendously well. Kennaquhair. waa making up ground rapidly at ihe ©Lose, but weight tola. • ■. "
